  1. DSS EditingPrecourse Materials Module 0 - FY 2014 Introduction, Review, and Basic Skills

  2. Specific Skills for the DSS Course– You should be able to do before course: • Open ArcCatalog • Open ArcMap • Add Data • Arrange layers in the Table of Contents • Use the Symbol Selector to change symbology • Open a data layer’s Properties • Symbolize data based on an attribute(s) • Open the attribute table for a data layer • Select data from the attribute table • Select data using the Select Features tool • Select features by attribute • Select features by location

  3. ArcMapTable of Contents (TOC) Views

  4. List by Drawing Order List by Source (shows full pathway to all data) List by Visibility List by Selection (Toggle Selectable; Clear Selection; Current Selection)

  5. Table of Contents Options: Table of Contents “patches” changes default symbols for ALL features of a given type. Example, changing default symbol for polygons to “natural areas” changes soils and quadrangles alike. Line Options Polygon Options

  6. Selection Options Within ArcMap

  7. List by Selection (Toggle Selectable; Clear Selection; Current Selection) • The TOC has a new option to List the layers by Selection. • Can set your selectable layers from this display option • Selectable • Not selectable Select Features Tool has multiple ways to select features

  8. Selection Menu • Select by attributes • Select by Location • Select using a Graphic Selection Options offers functionality how the interactive selection works Interactive Selection allows user to add/remove/select from selected items when using the Select Feature Tool

  9. Select by Attributes allows users to create a selection based on a defined query based on feature attributes.

  10. Select by Location allows users to create a selection based on a spatial location in relationship to another layer.

  11. Select by Graphics allows users to create a selection based on a defined location of a graphic element off the Drawing Toolbar Under Selection Options, there are several ways to treat how the features are selected within the graphic

  12. Based on the selected features, using the Statistics option, one can get simple statistics based on a column within the attribute table: • Count • Minimum • Maximum • Sum • Mean • Standard Deviation

  13. Using the Interactive Selection Method : • - Create a New Selection (default) • Add more to the Existing Selection • Remove from the Existing Selection • Select a subset from the Existing Selection

  14. Users can create a selection layer file based on a group of selected items. It creates a new layer in the TOC for that project, but it still links to the initial feature class.

  15. Selected Feature Class Properties

  16. Display Expression - Rasters • - Covers basic and common display options for layers. There are different options for vector and raster layers. • Transparency (Both) • Resampling method (Raster) • Contrast and Brightness (Raster) Vector Raster Hillshade with 40% transparent elevation data

  17. Nearest Neighbor Bilinear Interpolation Cubic Convolution Elevation Data – Continuous Data Alternate Display Resampling Techniques for Raster Data Layers Nearest Neighbor Majority Soils layers – Discrete Data

  18. Display Expression - Vectors What shows up in the attribute table or the identify tool • Can be limited by Fields checked on under Fields tab • Can create VB script/expression to have multiple fields showing at a single time Map Tips – when checked on is a graphic element that pops up when cursor hovers over a feature and will disappear as cursor moves around

  19. Fields Options Can globally select/unselect all fields - Fields checked on – This is what shows up in the attribute table and the identify tool Move individual fields up or down within attribute table Sort – by alphabetical order Identify Tool Attribute Table

  20. Labeling using Layer Properties labels based on the default Label Field under the Labels tab. -Default in this case is areasymbol (NE159), can change to Mapunit Symbol (musym)

  21. Miscellaneous Functionality within ArcMap

  22. Effects Toolbar Adjust Contrast Adjust Brightness Adjust Transparency Adjust Dim Layer Swipe Tool Flicker Tool and Rate Adjusts the contrast of the selected layer. Adjusts the brightness of the selected layer. Adjusts the transparency of the selected layer. Allows you to set a dim level for a map layer that enables other layers to take visual precedence - only available for basemap layers Allows you to use the swipe tool to interactively peel the selected layer back and see underneath it. Allows you to have the layer blink off and on continuously. The flicker rate is determined by the number of milliseconds (thousandths of a second)

  23. Bookmarks In ArcGIS 10.x, bookmarks are now their own menu Item. Create Bookmark – Creates a spatial snapshot of the data frame view. Can rename to something meaningful when creating it Once created, created bookmarks will be part of menu list.

  24. Bookmarks - continued Zooms To- Zooms to selected bookmark or extent of all bookmarks if none selected Pans To - Pans to center of area defined by selected bookmark, stays at same map scale Create - Creates new bookmark Arrow up/down - Reorders the bookmarks Remove/Remove All - Removes the bookmarks – individual or all Load/Save - Can save bookmark to file and/or load off a saved file

  25. Overview Overview window allows users to see at a quick glance where they are currently located on a reference layer without losing location in the Data View; Default reference layer is the bottom layer in the Table of Contents Right-click window header to get options to update or change how things are displayed Note - Can resize or move the extent box by clicking and dragging to new location or clicking the corners to shrink/expand – it will move the Data View extent to fit based on new parameters Can change the reference layer (and its properties) Can change the extent symbol properties and background color

  26. Magnifier Magnifier allows for users to see at close up view of an area without adjusting the rest of the map display within the Data View; Users are able to edit within this window; Can move by left –clicking and dragging to new location Can change the zoom %, set a fixed scale, or change to a Viewer using Properties Can change the zoom in % by selecting a new value from the drop down list

  27. Viewer Viewer allows for users have an independent viewer. It acts similar to a regular Data View. Users are able to edit within this window Icon - on Tools menu Can change the zoom %, set a fixed scale, or change to a Magnifier window using Properties Note – Dual monitor users can put a Viewer screen on 2nd monitor and maximize by double clicking title bar of Viewer window. The view may become inactive, which limits functionality (no feature or graphic editing), but allows for maximized area of display.
