  1. Drug Round-Up, Deviant Sexuality Week 8!

  2. What’s Up? • Any questions? • Show & Tells? • Let’s share about the midterm • What did you do? • How did it turn out?

  3. Where we left off

  4. Drug Arrests Have Been Rising Source: FBI, Uniform Crime Reports, Crime in the United States, annually.

  5. Most of these arrests are for pot Source: FBI, Uniform Crime Reports, Crime in the United States, annually.

  6. Wisconsin

  7. Institutionally-Constructed Deviance

  8. But then how do we “treat” this? • Treating a structural problem individually? • Think about the different people involved with illegal drugs in this country. How do we treat them? Can you map this treatment along lines of social advantage and disadvantage? • Do you agree with Michelle Alexander’s (2010) argument that the “drug war” (as part of mass incarceration more generally) is the “New Jim Crow?”

  9. The Career of a Drug Dealer • The Adler’s 2 articles (“Researching Dealers & Smugglers,” & “ Shifts & Oscillations”) • Temporary careers “fraught with multiple attempts at retirement” • What lures them back?

  10. Researching Dealers and Smugglers • What is “the covert role?” • Do you think this is ethical?

  11. Researching Dealers and Smugglers What are some of the benefits of participating in the deviant acts with the respondents? What are some of the drawbacks?

  12. Researching Dealers and Smugglers Adler discusses 6 problems/issues rooted in their experience doing research on deviant groups. Can you name any?

  13. Studying Risky Deviant Groups • In your opinion, do the ends justify the means? • What, to you, would be “too far?”

  14. What do you think? • Before you read the article on the topic for this week, what had you heard about autoerotic asphyxia?

  15. Autoerotic Sexual Asphyxia

  16. Frantisek Kotzwara

  17. David Carradine

  18. Stephen Milligan

  19. Michael Hutchence

  20. Autoerotic Sexual Asphyxia • “Primarily a solitary, loner practice…” (p 451) • Maybe, maybe not: “It was plain creepy to me, not because of how the people found gratification, but that all the reports analyzed where of those who had died. I understand that Sexual Asphyxia is a solo deal, but it would have been interesting to get a live perspective or at least mentioned trying to find someone.” - Elaine

  21. Why would someone do this? • Physical: Hypoxia Warning sign from a small-plane pilot website

  22. Hypoxia: not that unusual as a “fun” activity

  23. Why would someone do this? • Psychological: difficult to generalize, but comes from desire for fantasy • Doing something forbidden • Masochism • Blurred lines between pleasure and pain • Basically? Same reasons as other sexually-based paraphilia

  24. Myths about asphyxia • Lots of misconceptions • Families • Investigators

  25. What do you think? • The article notes that “[m]asturbation is one of the few cultural taboos that older society pretends to hold on to…” • Do you buy this? • Ex: Joycelyn Elders • Do you think that the fate of General Elders would be repeated today?

  26. Myths - dimensions • The article notes that the incidence of women engaging in autoerotic asphyxia is greatly underestimated. • What does the book say is the reason why? • Do you buy this reason? Or do you think that there are actual gender differences? • How can this hurt women? Men?

  27. Is there a safe way to do this? • Nope. • Carotid body: small cluster of chemoreceptors located near the fork of the carotid artery • Can’t you just hold your breath?

  28. Sexual paraphilias • “powerful and persistent sexual interest other than in copulatory or precopulatory behavior with phenotypically normal, consenting adult human partners” (Cantor, Blanchard, & Barbaree 2009)

  29. So, What do you think? • What do you think, statistically, is the most common paraphilia? • Depends how you define it… • Psych vs. Soc outlook • Of course, also depends upon the respondents…

  30. No one tells the truth? “I think that the most critical part of creating a survey is the importance of confidentiality. If people’s responses are not confidential, they will be less likely to answer the questions truthfully. This in turn would affect the overall results of the study.” –Heidi “The authors stated that when first confronted with the idea scientists were skeptical about giving this survey to people because no one would answer it truthfully. Which is true, no one wants their behaviors analyzed and or scrutinized.” – Vinnie Social desirability bias - BUT

  31. Studies of Sexual behavior • About the NHSLS • Landmark study • Life course & Environment

  32. What do you think? • If someone asked you about your own behavior, would you be likely to: • Accept and reply truthfully? • Accept and probably lie? • Decline altogether?

  33. Studies of Sexual Behavior • Why do you think most studies of sexuality, as Laumann et al contend, focus on deviance and malfunction? • What purpose does that serve? • People? • Medical establishment? • Researchers?

  34. Sexual Deviance is Not Necessarily Harm-Inducing • “Benign” paraphilias

  35. Crushing

  36. Sploshing

  37. Giantess

  38. Smoking

  39. Balloon Popping

  40. Pony Play

  41. Real Dolls

  42. What do you think? • What is your reaction to these paraphilias? Do you think they should be classified as deviant? Harmful? • Moser • (DSM only diagnoses them as a disorder when they cause distress or harm to self or others)
