  1. PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION I can identify and use the the reactants and the products to explain the process of both photosynthesis and cellular respiration

  2. Who? What? When? Where? And Why? Who: Plants What: Photosynthesis, uses reactants from the environment 1. Sunlight 2. CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) 3. H2O (Water) When: Collects the sun’s light when it is out. Where: Chloroplasts - Organelles found only in plant cells that carry out photosynthesis. Why: To produce: 1. C6H12O6 ( Glucose, Sugar, Food) 2. O2 (Oxygen)

  3. Who? What? When? Where? And Why? Who: Animals What: Cellular Respiration, uses reactants from the environment 1. Glucose (Food) 2. Oxygen When: Constantly, collects oxygen. Where: Mitochondria - Organelles found in plant and animal cells that carry out cellular respiration. Why: To produce: 1. ATP (Energy) 2. Water (Waste) 3. Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

  4. EQUATIONFORPHOTOSYNTHESIS Reactants Products WATER OXYGEN produces 6CO2 + 6H2O + ENERGY C6H12O6 + 6O2 CARBON DIOXIDE GLUCOSE

  5. EQUATION FORCellular RESPIRATION Products Reactants CARBON DIOXIDE ATP GLUCOSE C6H12O6 + 6O2 produces 6CO2 + 6H2O + ENERGY OXYGEN WATER

  6. HOW DO THEY RELATE? Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration CHECK WITH YOUR ELBOW PARTNER…

  7. Overview of photosynthesis and respiration SUN CO2 Waste Products RADIANT ENERGY Water & CO2 CELL ACTIVITIES PHOTOSYNTHESIS RESPIRATION GLUCOSE & O2 ATP(ENERGY)

  8. Reflect: How do photosynthesis and cellular respiration relate?Use either your pink or blue reflection cards to summarize what you have learned. Be creative.

  9. Lesson Summary • Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are related. How? • Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of plant cells. • Cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of plant and animal cells. • Whenever you see an arrow in our equations, think “produces”. • Reactants produce products. Remember, what one produces the other one needs. It is a constant cycle.
