  1. Overview and Update on the Digital Railway Martin Arter Programme Development Director Digital Railway

  2. Digital Railway: More For Less >> Play Digital Railway video

  3. Industry demand for a long-term plan of digital investment “ The biggest risk we face for the Digital Railway is to do nothing Ben Rule, Great Western Railway We believe that Digital Railway is the correct strategic direction and essential to delivering the future requirements for the country. Thales UK We welcome the capacity and safety benefits that the move to a Digital Railway will bring. RVEL The Rail Delivery Group strongly supports the implementation of the Digital Railway programme, which will increase capacity, performance and safety on the GB rail network RDG ASLEF welcomes the plans to invest in the modernisation of the rail network. The promise of up to 40% more capacity is good news for both passengers and for rail freight. ASLEF SmarterUK members are supportive of the goals of the ‘Digital Railway’ programme SmarterUK The Digital Railway programme is the most tangible expression to our customers that our industry is forward looking Nigel Jones, Strategic Advisor DB Cargo (UK) ” There is no ‘do nothing’ scenario…the question isn’t whether to do digital or not…it’s how fast can we do it? Paul Plummer, Chief Executive, ATOC & Rail Delivery Group

  4. Rail is vitally important for UK economic growth

  5. The digital dividend from these technologies South West Main Line Case Study More Trains 30,000 Extra peak Time Seats From 24 to 35 trains per hour 4 Years Earlier than next best plan 30% Lower capital cost than conventional alternatives Better Connections Greater Reliability

  6. National benefits – on every kind of route • Mixed use, single lines (e.g. Aberdeen to Central Belt) • Better connections at Perth • Significant reduction in cost of signalling design. Operating and renewals savings • Connecting the Northern Powerhouse • Enhances integrated travel, particularly with new HS2 stations at Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield • Significant reduction in signalling and other costs. • Reduced need for conventional enhancements. • Rural lines (e.g. Grantham – Skegness) • Caters for seasonal demand fluctuations • Significant reduction in cost of signalling design. Operating, maintenance and renewals saving • Long-distance Intercity (e.g. West Mids - London) • Up to 10% reduction in delay minutes. • Electrification projects up to 15% cheaper. • Freight Corridors • (e.g. East Mids to Felixstowe) • Flexibility for freight services from East Midland quarries and Port of Felixstowe. • Significant reduction in cost of signalling design. Operating and renewals savings • London commuter (e.g. SWML) • Additional 11 trains per hour in AM peak. Facilitates long term growth as part of Crossrail 2 • Significant reduction in cost of signalling design. Operating and renewals savings

  7. We are fast becoming a victim of our own success 50% Of Europe’s congested infrastructure 200% Peak time overcrowding on our busiest routes 2nd Most intensively used railway in Europe Extra passenger journeys predicted in next 2 decades 1bn

  8. The Long Term Plan Meeting the challenge of performance and growth

  10. Transparent roadmap for change…

  11. Continuously learning, updating and sharing our knowledge throughout the deployment plan roll out Phase 2 DR Toolkit Development Upgraded Operational Railway NYL Scheme Development Scheme Deployment & Commissioning DR Toolkit Deployment & Commissioning DR Toolkit Demonstration Phase 2 Deployment Drop A Reliability Growth & Operational Optimisation Drop B Drop C Digital Railway is adopting a Phased approach to minimise the risks of development Delivers capability in line with the Railway State requirements Allows lessons learned to be processed and shared Allows testing and development of new technology and systems

  12. A 25 year deployment plan to give the supply chain the confidence it needs …

  13. …With an approach to maximises benefits across the industry • Maximising benefit as early as possible • Co-ordinated at a national level • Local choice and flexibility- ETCS detailed by route aspirations • Supported by appropriate standards & policies • Consulted across industry Value to the supply chain

  14. Digital Railway Phase 3 Programme will develop new technological products, systems, processes and capabilities to realise these outcomes Funding Milestone Achieved Phase 3 Development of funding requirements Investment Panel Outline of requirements delivery • The Phase 3 programme seeks to accelerate development of this digital transformation including business change and technology adoption and complete the deployment to an accelerated timescale • It will provide cost effective Open Architecture and moving block technology solutions to the industry, which can be tailored to the requirements of the different stakeholders, optimising the operation of the railway and delivering a complete national integrated Digital Railway for the 21st Century.

  15. Challenges to accelerating innovation

  16. Filling the gaps in the industry capability • Stakeholder Interviewees Capability Observations Most Mature • Safety and compliance in operations and engineering design • change management, data, information, and systems management, especially the introduction of new systems and technology Least Mature

  17. Prizes at home and abroad Leading in advanced rail operating capability

  18. Growing global momentum in rail • Progress in modernising rail command, control and signalling systems had been slow and piecemeal in recent decades. • But we are reaching an inflection point. • Digital signalling based on European standards is becoming the de facto standard for major schemes.

  19. Becoming a global exporter of high tech rail engineering. “We are investing record amounts in the UK’s rail network, and other countries around the world are following in our footsteps. This is a massive opportunity for British rail suppliers to capitalise on this investment and win new business at home and abroad” -Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin "Rail is a vital part of our long-term economic plan and…the benefits are being felt throughout the supply chain … I am delighted to see great work being done [in the UK] and exported worldwide “ -Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport Claire Perry

  20. Prizes for the Supply Chain

  21. What’s the supply-chain opportunity?  Growth of existing & new markets for suppliers, large and small  A bridgehead to an international growth market  Stronger confidence in long-term demand Rail Supply Group strategy calls for “greater and more reliable visibility of planned investments”. Global rail market is worth £128bn. Digital modernisation creates new markets for suppliers – e.g. for new kinds of systems integration. .

  22. The pipeline is full of supply chain opportunities Strategic Supply Chain Opportunities Demonstration & Deployment Creating New Technology Planning • WagonIntegrity • Weight and length of freight trains • Safe demolition and removal of lineside equipment • Portable ETCS • Maintenance Strategy • Rail Technical Strategy Tactical challenges addressed in our workshop sessions:
