  4. 7th Grade – What’s New? • In grade 7, you will have 6 different teachers This means: • Different grading policies (weights, make up policies, homework policies) • Different classroom procedures (when you turn in work, how you organize notebook, etc.) • Different personalities, classroom environments, discipline procedures may vary • You, the student, must adjust to these demands

Start of a New Phase • Choices in classes • Different student groups each period • New opportunities to make new friends • Teachers you interact with have many students (sometimes 150 or more). • Teachers cannot remember what you are missing, or if you were absent. • YOU must be the person in charge of your education (Your parents, teachers, counselor, principal are support for you).

New opportunities = New responsibilities • Sports = must remain eligible to participate • Lockers = must use it wisely • PE uniforms = must prepare, plan • Clubs and Leadership = must remain a student example in terms of behavior • Electives = must be eligible for the elective • Placement in Math Support and ELD based on test scores

  7. First Thing: Show Up • If you’re not here on time, you can’t learn the material • Stats: • Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absenteeism. • When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for promotion and graduation • Promotion – More than 10 unexcused absences = no promotion ceremony

Know Your Academic Progress – Set a Goal • Set an academic goal for yourself • Use the AERIES Student Portal – need an email address to set up. • Monitor your grades, assignments, test scores • If there is a discrepancy, ASK • Do not work in “make up mode” • Complete assignments on time • Use your planner and phone for reminders and appointments • Know where you stand – it’s your grade.

ASK – Don’t be Afraid • Ask for help when you do not understand • Study with friends who are good students • Stay for tutoring • Ask your teachers to repeat tests (when allowed) • Check your grades on portal, ASK if you think there is an error • Asking for help is a sign of initiative, strength, maturity

  10. Understand Grading Policies • All BYMS teachers use weighted categories: • Example: • Tests/Quizzes: 50% • Homework 20% • Classwork/Projects: 30% • Each assignment/test is assigned points and goes into a weighted category • If a student has 100 point assignment missing and a 100 point test, what will impact grade most?

  11. Understand GPA • How to compute GPA • A = 4 points, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1. F = 0 • Compute the following for a 7th grader: • ELA 7 D • Math 7 C • Science 7 B • PE A • History 7 F • ELD D

  12. Low GPA Impact • Example before has 1.71 GPA for Quarter 1 • Student becomes Probationary for Sports/Extracurricular (can play but on a probationary status) • Student gets 1.89 Quarter 2 • Student is now INELIGIBLE to participate • 2.0 GPA required for BYMS Promotion and CHS graduation

  13. Get Good Grades • 7th grade GPA: • ELA 7 A • Math 7 B • History C • PE A • Science C • STEM A • Compute this GPA

  14. Work Hard • Good grades don’t come by accident • Requires hard work • Each period, each day • Step by step • How do you eat an elephant? • Goals require work

  15. Practice • Just like any activity, learning takes practice • Put in the time • Allot time for studying and reading • We can’t learn some ideas with one review • Practice, Practice, Practice

Organization 101 • Create folders for each subject on computer • Create Color Coded binders for each subject • Use tabs inside your binder • Put EVERYTHING in notebook as soon as you get it • Write assignments in planner BEFORE bell rings • Organize your locker • Lay out clothes, school supplies night before • Set time and place aside for homework/studying • See counselor or teacher if need supplies • Don’t wait until night before to study or do project

  17. Optimism When you struggle with a subject, assignment, or task.. • Don’t doubt your ability • Doubt your strategy If what you are doing is not working • Try Something Different
