  1. PROJECT REPORT ONGLOBAL COMMUNITIES FOR SUSTAINABILITYBy AHLCON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, MAYUR VIHAR, PHASE-I DELHI

  2. AIM Aim of this project is to develop a model of exchange and engagement for school communities in two different cultural contexts through piloting a no. of sustainable development initiatives.

  3. METHODOLOGY AND PLAN OF ACTION Information regarding sustainability concerns was gathered by talking to Dr B.C. Sabat (well known environmentalist). To gather more information regarding sustainability issues like water, air, land, energy and waste. A questionnaire was made on these issuses and than the comparative study on the basis of age and gender was done. For this study IX and XI class students and their parent were involved. After collecting the filled survey form, graphical analysis was done. On the basis of graphical analysis various measures are suggested.

  4. Analysis of Survey ConductedEnvironmental Awareness on the basis of Marks Scored by Parents

  5. Analysis Gender wise

  6. Comparative study of different major concern in parents

  7. Survey report for students (XI class)

  8. Comparative study of different major concern (XI class Student)

  9. Survey report for students of IX class

  10. Comparative study of different major concerns (IX Students)

  11. On the basis of graphs above it was found that mainly people are more concerned about water, air, energy and waste. We in our campus already following some practices and are planning some more to make our campus more environment friendly. The key environmental challenges which we our facing in India is mainly lack of concern about environmental issues. So, by doing certain eco-friendly activities in our campus we are trying to sensitize young mind which in turn can bring change in society.

  12. Activities done at School levelLet’s go green. This is a well known phrase heard all over these days. Government is also doing lot of efforts to revert back the climate change. All of us can save our planet earth but for that we have to change our habits. In the present era we all want sustainable development without harming environment. There is need to urgently equip the youths "future leaders" on the importance of clean environment and sound environmental management. We believe environmental education in Schools will instill in these our future leaders (Students) knowledge about the situation challenging the present adult generation and then have a kind of vision for mission on how to save the future generation from most of the disaster experienced today.

  13. Activities Done at School level are as follows- • projects lot of activities are done and they are as follows- • 24 March and 22 April - The students participated in Earth Hour and students were motivated to switch off power from 8:30 p.m – 9:30 p.m. and this process is repeated every month on the last working day. • 22 April – Earth Day Celebration – Plantation of medicinal plant done by Principal Sir (Mr Ashok Kumar Pandey) and Head Senior School (Ms Rama Srinivasan) in our own beautiful herbal garden. • 24 April – Talk and survey organized on Future of Earth and Sutainable development by Dr. Taylor from Belfast in Northern Ireland. Organisation attached-Centre of environment and education. • 14 August- The students participated in Green- I contest, an initiative of Yi organized by CII. The students of the green school programme evaluated the various measures that can be taken by our school to reduce carbon footprint and suggested three affordable practical solutions that can be implemented within the school premises.

  14. 18 August- Survey with the help of Questionnaire on major environmental concern is done by distributing it to students and parents of different age group.3 Sept- The School participated in Yammuna Jiye Abhiyaan., organized in collaboration with CMS Environment to prevent river Yamuna (life line of Delhi) from its bad shape. The chosen day was well thought appropriate day to initiate such an exercise, the next day to festival Ganesh chaturthi. Most of the people dump their puja left overs and our school children as a volunteers desisted them to throw it in river. 17 children of ninth class as volunteers, wearing caps and carrying placards (with messages) in person stood on either side of the road on the bridge facing the traffic at Nizammudin bridge (NH-24), to keep vigil and prevent people from throwing things into the river. Also students distributed educational leaflets and stickers to the passer by to advocate the revival of the river.3 Sept- As a part of holistic learning the school has adopted school of physically challenged students. The art and craft club of our school organized a social activity in their campus wherein 6 children and 2 teachers visited, demonstrated and interacted with physically challenged children.

  15. There are a number of simple steps followed in Ahlcon international school to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in the school. Reduce The school ensures that everyone knows to photocopy on both sides.  The school encourages everyone to print e-mails only when absolutely necessary. Only one paper towel is used at a time. The school encourages everyone to bring in waste-free packed lunches and snacks.  Various Practices which we are already following in our school are as follows-

  16. Reuse • The school has a well labeled scrap paper tray in every room. • We use refillable food containers and bottles and avoid over-packed foods. • Recycle • The school has implemented waste separation scheme, by keeping 4 separate bins for maintaining the segregation of food waste, cans and foils, paper waste and plastics.

  17. Practices to be implemented to reduce waste at our campus • The school intends to take a lead in making itself an environment-friendly school and thus wants to implement the following ways for the waste management. • 1. Recycling of papers is one of the best methods of recycling waste. The waste paper can be sent to paper recyclable factories. • 2. The school has implemented a waste separation scheme but the best pathway towards cleaner, greener and healthier living is decomposition by the usage of organic waste converter. The food waste is homogenised into odour free output in 3-4 hours and the output is then converted to compost in two weeks.

  18. 3. The garbage bank activity is an extension of the above and provides an opportunity to students to become more environmentally conscious and to extend this information to their families and local communities. The garbage bank activity is an imitation of a commercial bank where deposits are not money but recyclable wastes. At the bank, recyclable wastes from their surrounding school areas and households are collected. Newspapers, magazines, glass bottles and plastic packaging, are collected and deposited by participating students

  19. For every ton of paper used for recycling the saving are: • At least 30000 litres of water. • 3000 – 4000 KWH electricity (enough power for an average 3 bed room house for one year. • 95% of air pollution. • By adopting organic compost converter, food waste is efficiently converted to compost thus reducing release of organic carbon.

  20. Suggestive Practices for Energy Conservation • ROOF TO BE PAINTED WHITE FOR BETTER INSULATION AND TO MAKE 57% OF THE ROOF AREA GREEN. • USE OF COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT (CFL), NEXT GENERATION TUBE LIGHTS AND ELECTRONIC CHOKES. In comparison between CFL’s and inefficient GLS, The cost of GLS is higher but definitely there is pay back within 6-7 months.

  21. INSTALLATION OF MOTION SENSOR LIGHTS in the bathrooms and corridors will control the misuse of electricity. These sensor light automatically get switched on as soon as it senses the human presence but rest of the time it remains switched off.MONITORING THE TRANSFORMER AND AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR. Monitoring the transformer and automatic voltage regulator as the name implies is a device intended to regulate voltage automatically.i.e. to take a varying voltage level and turn it into a constant voltage level . The losses are regulated at monthly intervals.

  22. ONLY 5-STAR RATED ELECTRONIC APPLIANCES TO BE BOUGHT TO CONSERVE ELECTRICITY.How are these practices going to be effective-1.The average CFL light bulb saves Rs. 3872 in energy costs over the life of the bulb, and last 16 times longer than an equivalent standard bulb. Even if used only a few hours a day the hours it is used total for the entire life of the bulb. It will just last you longer.2. Insulation of roof can help reduce heating of building by 10-15°C. It is “absolutely incredible!” Air conditioning system becomes more efficient.

  23. Water is essential to life on earth. We need water to grow food, keep clean, provide power, control fire, and last but not least, we need it to stay alive! It is estimated that 69% of worldwide water use is for irrigation, with 15-35% of irrigation withdrawals being unsustainable..It is estimated that 15% of worldwide water use is for household purposes. These include drinking water, bathing, cooking, sanitation, and gardening.

  24. . We can add and use efficient watering system for shrubs in the gardens of school. By adding 2 - 4 inches layer of organic matter (generated from school’s organic waste converter) willnot only slow the evaporation of moisture as water holding capacity of soil but also discourage weed growth. Pressing down the organic matter around the drip line of each plant will form a slight depression which is likely prevent or minimize water2.We need to install a rain barrel with a water catchment system in our school. Use of natural rainwater for garden will lower water bill. It is estimated that a roof area of only 1,000 sq ft can provide approx. 600 gallons of water during a one-inch rainfall.
