KMA Update: GSICS Calibration Activities and Inter-Calibration Results

This report provides an update on the Korea Meteorological Administration's (KMA) calibration activities in the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS), including the development of additional ray matching methods and the update of the Data Calibration Center (DCC) based NASA algorithm in visible (VIS) calibration. It also highlights the agency's participation in EP, GDWG, and GRWG, and presents the preliminary results of inter-calibration comparisons and banding issues in GEO-LEO and GEO-GEO channels.

  1. Report from KMA20th GSICS Executive Panel, Sochi, Russia, 16-17 May 2019 Dohyeong Kim (KMA)

  2. KMA update • COMS MI • Develop the additional ray matching method and update DCC based NASA algorithm in VIS calibration • Geo-KOMPSAT-2A • Geo-KOMPSAT-2A was launched on December 4, 2018(21:37:07 UTC) • Ongoing about implement GSICS inter-calibration system to AMI • Other major events affecting the agency or its participation in GSICS • GSICS based In-Orbit Test of GEO-LEO/VISNIR, IR calibration

  3. KMA Participation in EP, GDWG, GRWG • Points of contacts/meeting participants: • EP : Dohyeong Kim • GRWG: Dohyeong Kim, Minju Gu • GDWG: Hyunjong Oh, Jin Woo • Main contribution to GDWG actions • Set up and operate a GitHub project for GDWG activities • Review GPRC websites • Building a plotting tool development environments in KMA • Main contribution to GRWG actions • Update VIS calibration in ray matching method and GSICS DCC based NASA algorithm • Double difference of inter-calibraiton comparison results of COMS/MI using before and after reprocessed CrIS data for 2015 • Inter-calibraiont results of COMS/MI using with and without MBCC

  4. Current and prospective GSICS Products • GSICS DCC method issues of KMA has been solved with the support of NASA team (Thanks to Dave!)

  5. Highlights of KMA calibration activities(1/5) • GSICS DCC for COMS MI • Periods : 2011.4. ~ 2018.12. • Degradation ratio of GSICS (NASA) DCC is -1.44%/year using Mode.-1.45%/year using Mean. • Mode is more stable than mean. GSICS DCC COMS MI Radiance Frequency Blue (2018) Red (2011) = -1.44 ±0.07 [%/year] = -1.45 ±0.13 [%/year] Annual Drift(MODE) Annual Drift(MEAN)

  6. Highlights of KMA calibration activities(2/5) • Compare with DCC methods (RTM vs. GISCS DCC vs. Rat Matching(GEO-LEO Collocated DCC)) • Periods : 2011.4. ~ 2018.12. • Degradation ratio of each method. Ray Matching: -1.60%/year • RTM DCC: -1.30 %/yearGSICS DCC: -1.38%/year • Result of GSICS DCC is compared with Aqua MODIS(MYD02SSH, 5km Radiance data) and COMS MI. Annual Drift(Ray Matching) Annual Drift(RTM DCC) Annual Drift(GSICS DCC) = -1.60 ±0.12 [%/year] = -1.30 ±0.10 [%/year] = -1.38 ±0.16 [%/year]

  7. Highlights of KMA calibration activities(3/5) • to provide the inter-calibration comparison results of COMS/MI using before and after reprocessed CrIS data • Period of CrISafterand CrISbefore: Jan/01/2015-Dec/31/2015(normal spectral resolution)

  8. Highlights of KMA calibration activities(4/5) • Double difference of inter-calibraiton comparison results of COMS/MI using before and after reprocessed CrIS data • Timesereise of COMS – CrISafter, COMS - CrISbeforeand (COMS-CrISbefore)-(COMS-CrISafter)for RAC data @ standard scene

  9. Highlights of KMA calibration activities(5/5) • Inter-calibration using COMS with MBCC and without MBCC (from March 2016 to August 2017) • GEO(MI with MBCC, and without MBCC ) data and LEO(IASI-A, and AIRS) data for each 10 days in March, June, September, and December 2016 • The current MBCC performance could be affected to generate products
