  7. Historic and geographic name used to describe a region of south-eastern Europe • Takes its name from the Balkan Mountains which run through the center of Bulgaria into eastern Serbia • Its fractiousness and tendency to splinter into rival political entities led to the coining of the term Balkanization • Term Balkan commonly connotes a connection with violence, religious strife, ethnic clannishness and a sense of hinterland • If including Romania and Bulgaria, the Black Sea borders the eastern coast of the peninsula

The Alps – or – Alpine System • One of the great mountain systems of Europe • Stretches from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. • Extends from the Pyrenees to the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains on the east • Highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc on the French-Italian border

  12. Apennines (Italy) • Stretches 1000 km (615 miles) from the north to the south of Italy along its east coast, traversing the entire peninsula, and forming, as it were, the backbone of the country. • Part of the Alpine system
