  2. The Way Business Operates

  3. I. Overview • In this unit, you will read 3 passages about business and people engaged in business; as you read think of those elements that go to make people achieve success in the business world.

  4. Structure • In this unit, all the 3 passages are about business. The first is a description of why young people are more likely to succeed in the business world. Good cases are provided by the author to illustrate her thesis. The second goes deeper into the area of industrial psychology. It tells what employers or potential employers should know about their business. The third passage is about how to advertise by means of music, which is, of course, no easy job.

  5. Young Entrepreneurs Have the Edge The main characters in this passage are Manjit Minhas and her 23-year-old brother, Ravinder. After telling readers the interesting story of the two young entrepreneurs, the author concludes that in the world of business young people tend to have more chances to succeed. Text A

  6. The main idea of this passage is that in any institution, a business corporate in particular, what happens between team members is half the game and inner dynamics are best understood as they relate to the team’s efforts to reach outward. It’s What’s on the Outside that Counts Text B

  7. In this passage, the author argues that, like houses and people, advertising jingles have undergone a makeover. What the author means is that those catchy little tunes that promote everything from soft drinks to appliances are now called “audio logos” and “short songs.” If You Whistle a Happy Tune, Don’t Call It a Jingle Text C

  8. Focus of this session

  9. II. Text A Young Entrepreneurs Have the Edge • Main Idea of the Text • The main characters in this passage are Manjit Minhas and her 23-year-old brother, Ravinder. They started their business career at an early time in their life, even when they were still in the school and college. Fortunately, they had all the right things needed for a successful businessman, like young and energetic age, relevant qualification from the university, good sense of the market preference, good family relationship and atmosphere, and perhaps some good luck. In short, as the author suggests, young entrepreneurs have the edge and they are more blessed in the business world.

  15. Language Points • spell (para. 2): • a period of time doing sth or working somewhere (干某事或在某处工作的)一段时间 • e.g. • She had a spell as a singer before becoming an actress.

  19. Language Points Difficult Sentences • In Calgary, it’s the industry to get a job in,” Ms. Minhas said. In Calgary, it’s the industry that people should get a job in.

  20. Language Points • But what comes naturally to many of today’s graduating students – a number of universities and colleges now offer workshops for budding entrepreneurs – can be a riskier business for older Canadians accustomed to a steady pay-cheque, said Barry Witkin, a chartered accountant and the chief executive officer of Prime50 Employment Services, which matches job candidates 50 years or older with employers. (para.5) • 在这个长句中,a number of universities and colleges now offer workshops for budding entrepreneurs 这个句子是插入语,与主句关系意义不大。accustomed to a steady pay-cheque

  21. Language Points • With no debt or investors to worry about, Ms. and Mr. Minhas are focusing all their energy on expanding the business that they started when Ms. Minhas was 19 and her brother was still in high school, pooling their savings of $10,000.

  22. Language Points • We got nicely entrenched in the market and, two years ago, we decided that the beer industry was in need of a shake-up – the price of beer was just getting too high.
