Meet the Teacher Night ScheduleAll incoming 6th graders and new-to-Aprende 7th & 8th graders will start the night at 4:30 PM for a welcome presentation. 6th grade will start in their 1st period class and 7th & 8th grade will start in the grade level computer labs. (7th grade is in lab 216 & 8th grade is in lab 316) 4:30-5:00 PM. All students/parents: 1st period classroom 5:00 - 5:20 2nd period 5:23 - 5:43 3rd period 5:46 – 6:06 4th period Skip 5th period 6:09 - 6:29 6th period 6:32 - 6:52 7th period 6:55 - 7:15

Course of Study • Courses are taught by a content specialist (GATE teacher) • GATE coursework is available in all four core areas • English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies courses based upon grade level standards with extension/enrichment • Opportunities for high school math credit • Two electives of choice

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum • Updated curriculum guides for all GATE courses • address challenge, complexity, choice and control • provide extension and enrichment • consistency across schools • collaboration between teachers • Syllabus for each course showing expectations and learning outcomes • Learning compacts are in place for participation in GATE courses to ensure courses are rigorous

Criteria for Placement • Initial placement of students as they transition into 6th grade includes • Identification in one or more areas of giftedness AND/OR • Multiple measures of high ability (e.g., AzMERIT proficiency, classroom grades, teacher recommendation) • Full criteria available at https://www.kyrene.org/AdvPlacement • Subsequent course placements are defined by the course of study

13. Costs • Cost is $380 for this 48 hour trip* • Pay all at once • Payment plan Extra Cost: You need money for three total meals and an estimated $40 for souvenirs and snacks. *Tax Credit Eligible

14. Student Packet Will be sent home in 2 weeks. All forms from Packet must be signed and turned in with at least $110 by Friday, Sept. 7 to reserve a spot. Once money is received, it is non-refundable and will go directly to tax credit, even if the student is unable to attend.

20. 7th Grade Supply List Reminder: We are an AVID school, so all students will carry one organized binder this year. Be aware that teachers should not ask for multiple or individual binders. ● Students will receive an AVID agenda that will be placed in the front of their binder from the school. There is no need to purchase an additional agenda. ● One 3” binder (for use in all subject areas) ● 6 subject dividers with pockets (one for each subject) ● 3-subject notebook (ELA) ● colored pencils (for all subjects) ● #2 pencils – mechanical w/ lead or regular ● 4 highlighters – yellow, pink, green, and blue ● post-it notes ● blue or black pens and red pens ● loose leaf college-ruled lined paper ● 2 packages of 3”x 5” index cards ● dry-erase markers ● Small scissors, a ruler, and transparent tape (science) ● Colored markers ● Pencil sharpener to keep in backpack ● Pencil pocket to keep supplies organized in binder Students should NOT carry Sharpie permanent

21. Top10 Frequently Asked Questions • Do I accept extra credit? No. • Do I accept late work? Yes, but only BEFORE the test. • Is late work accepted for full credit? Yes. • How do I get my make-up work? Get handouts from the wall file at the back of the room. • How can I get extra help? Join our study group on Tuesdays or by appointment. • Where can I get information about assignments? Check with the “Information Manager” or see me before or after school.

22. What is the best way to get ahold of me? Email • Can I retake a test? Yes, after school Tuesdays, and with a completed test correctives assignment. 2. What can you do to help your child? • Check that their homework is complete. • Check my website and agendas for information. • Check their graded assignments and notebook work. • Check their online grades. • View their portfolio and celebrate their learning!!!! • Encourage your child to join the study group. • Encourage your child to be a problem solver!!!! • Allow student to do their own work.

23. The #1 most frequently asked question is……. • Why does it say my assignment is missing in the grade book, when I know I turned it in? Well….most likely, it is in the tray by the door that says, “NO NAME PAPERS.” If that fails, double-check your backpack and your house. I don’t mind looking for papers, but not until you’ve done some looking yourself!
