  3. The Big 3 We spend time class time focused on improving: 1. computational skills 2. conceptual understanding 3. logical reasoning/problem solving 7th grade – build foundation & prepare for the rigorous Algebra 1 8th grade – provide support in Algebra 1

  4. Trimester 1 OverviewStandards covered: CA7AF1.2, CA7AF2.1,CA7AF4.1, ALG4.0 ,CA7NS1.2, CA7NS1.3 ,CA7NS2.4, ALG4.0,CA7MG3.3, ALG5.0 ,CA7AF3.3, ALG6.0 7th grade • Integers • Order of Operations • Equations (one-step) • Fractions • Square Roots • Pythagorean Theorem • Graphing • Percents 8th grade • Integers • Order of Operations • Equations (multi-step) • Fractions • Inequalities • Word Problems • Graphing • Functions

  5. Policies Grading: • 10% Participation • 50% Classwork • 40% Quizzes/Quiz Corrections Late work: 10% penalty per day, up to 5 days late Absences: one day per day absent to complete make up work Use website for assignments/notes *there is no homework assigned in this class, but absentees will need to complete make-up work at home

  6. Participation • Warm-ups • Khan Academy • Whiteboards • Games (math bingo, SMADNESS, integer card games)

  7. Classwork • Worksheets (several class periods given to complete a worksheet – after that it becomes homework) • Khan Academy (score/grade level improvement based on individual student goals) • Groupwork(some projects and scribe/sage work) • Projects (projects include: penpal letters, mathematician biography, posters, songs/poems, webquests)

  8. Mini-Quizzes • About every 2 weeks & are based on the topics reviewed in class • Corrections are made on quizzes (with scores below 80%) the following class period • Quiz corrections are scored in two ways: completion and quiz score improvement (up to 80%)

  9. Khan Academy • Khan academy is completely online – includes problem sets and video tutorials • Students progress through the program at their own speed & appropriate skill level • Progress reports available online & at least once a trimester a parent signature will be required

  10. Math is difficult for me… • When I just started a new topic • When I don’t get the problem & become frustrated • When I don’t understand it very well • When I don’t know what to do • When I look at my notes & still don’t understand • When it is in the form of a word problem or long equation • When we start getting into harder topics • When I’m confused • When there is a new lesson • Most of the time • I haven’t paid attention or fool around • When I don’t understand it • When I miss a day of school • When I didn’t study • When I don’t know what to do

  11. Math is easy or fun for me… • When the math is complex but easy to understand • When someone does a few problems & then lets me try • When I actually get the problem • When we take notes & practice a lot • When we work with friends • When I get it clearly explained & shown to me • When we do projects • When we are taking notes & we can ask questions • When we do hands on or project activities • When I get it its easy and solving word problems is fun • Whenever its something I understand how to do • When we do rotations around the classroom • When I understand it • When we review on whiteboards

  12. Goals • I want my students to feel successful • I want them to be bold and ask questions • I want them to build the skills needed to be successful in their courses now as well be ready for rigorous math courses in the future
