Persuasive Writing – Propaganda devices • Glittering Generality • All Canadian • Healthy lifestyle • Good for the environment • Testimonial (must be good because ... uses it) • Real people • Athletes, actors • Transfer • Prestige, good looks transferred to an object • Name-calling • Negative image to competition • Card Stacking • Use only favourable info, ignore bad facts • Band wagon • Everyone is using it! • Snob Appeal • Exclusivity; be part of the elite • Rewards • Offer rebates or money back, discounts • Faulty Cause and Effect • Portray that use of a product or technique results in a positive effect when no real evidence supports it. • Repetition • Saying the name or key phrases over and over again so that it forms a lasting impression.

  6. Persuasive Writing D E V I C E S • Choose one of the devices on the preceding screen and write up an advertisement for something. • After you have completed this, you will present your advertisement. You will have 30 seconds to present.

Identify the device(s) used. • Choose another device from the list. • write up an advertisement for a product real or imaginary. • Will need to have pictures. • Will be for a newspaper or magazine. • These will be rated by the class for their persuasiveness. • Due: Friday, November 25.

  10. Persuasive Writing E V A L U A T I N G • Who created the media work and how are the creators’ values and viewpoint reflected? • Who is the intended audience? • What content has been left out or whose viewpoint is not expressed? • How might this work be different in a different medium?

Persuasive Writing D E V I C E S • Homework: • Bring in two advertisements; one from a magazine or newspaper and write about one seen on the television (this should be a well-known ad to most students). • Identify the device(s) used. • Identify the deceptive words used. • Evaluate each ad according to the questions given. • Write up a mini-report using these ads and the questions as headings. • Due: Friday, December 2.
