  7. Kings of Rome 1. Romulus Romulus was the legendary founder of Rome. The Sabine king, Tatius, co-ruled with Romulus from the time of the rape of the Sabine women until his death. 2. NumaPompilius NumaPompilius is credited with many of the ancient religious rituals of ancient Rome. 3. TullusHostilius TullusHostilius doubled the population of Rome. He was a warrior who defeated the Albans and Sabines in battle. 4. AncusMartius AncusMarcius was a grandson of NumaPompilius and a bridge builder. The bridge across the Tiber is credited to AncusMarcius. 5. Lucius TarquiniusPriscus First Etruscan king of Rome. Tarquin created 100 new senators and expanded Rome. He also planned out the Circus Maximus and established the Roman games. 6. ServiusTullius ServiusTullius was the son-in-law of TarquiniusPriscus. He divided the Roman citizens into tribes and went to war against the Veii. He set up a tax system taking only what people could afford. 7. TarquiniusSuperbus (Tarquin the Proud) The wicked TarquiniusSuperbus was the last Etruscan or any king of Rome. He was forcibly ousted by Brutus after his son Sextus raped Lucretia (wife of an important Roman).

Top tips for the exam… Typical structure: Describe in detail the stories that are relevant to the question Explain what the stories meant: consequences, importance, symbolism, meaning to later Romans, etc. Evaluate: Why has this story been told? How reliable is this account? How plausible is it? How useful is it for learning about later Romans? What does it tell us?
