  2. Outline • Determine Need/ Problem • A better learning and working environment in 312 Hammond. 2. Conceptualization • External Search: Determine a color for the walls that is conducive to learning. Also determine a type of lighting for the room. • Internal Search: Brainstorm possible solutions and determined a direction for the project.

Preliminary Design and Evaluation • Received ideas for project by interviewing students that have class in 312 Hammond and put our own input in. • Threw out ideas that we didn’t like anymore. 4. Detailed Design • Created a redesign of 312 Hammond on Google Sketchup 5. Production • Retouched the Google Sketchup for the final product.

  6. Problem Statement and Target Population • Problem Statement: Hammond 312 is not conducive to good learning environment. • Target Population: The students of Engineering Design 100 and the students of Engineering Design 497I

Concept Generation • Color • Blue is for intellectual stimulation. • Tangerine orange stimulates creativity. • Seafoam green is very relaxing. • Visibility • Elevate rear tables. • Lower the monitors. • Add another projection screen. • One large, centered projection screen. • Stagger tables. • Make tables round so the computer screen can be seen by all.

Is the design reasonable for the cost? • YES! • It is reasonable for all of the major improvements that we are making to the room because it would greatly enhance the learning environment and leave a positive impact on all engineers at Penn State who take classes or do projects in the classroom.

Concluding Remarks • This project served as a great first step in teaching us how to utilize the engineering design process in a real world situation! • The final design completely meets the requirements of the customer needs. • The common complaints of discouraging color, lack of visibility, and discomforting chairs and tables have all been solved by our final design.
