  1. The Robbinsville Township ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION • What IS an Environmental Commission? • Municipal environmental commissions, as advisory bodies to local government, can provide the expertise and information needed to address today’s complex environmental issues. Environmental commissions are local environmental advocates involved in a variety of activities. They can: • Advise municipal planning and zoning boards on the potential environmental impact of development proposals; • Advocate planned open space preservation at the municipal level; • Investigate environmental problems and offer solutions; • Research and propose ordinances; • Educate and inform residents, including school children, on ways to help protect the environment; • Interact with neighboring commissions, watershed agencies and other organizations to tackle regional and statewide problems; • Help monitor and explain to local citizens and officials the various state and federal environmental regulations and initiatives. • As advocates for the public interest, environmental commissions have an important role in municipal government. • Source: Pamphlet titled “Municipal Environmental Commissions in New Jersey,” ANJEC (Mendham, NJ) • What are we working on right now in Robbinsville? • In a partnership with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, we are putting together an Environmental Resource Inventory. This tool will serve as a valuable aid in land use planning. • We are participating in the NJ Community Partners Initiative, a clean energy campaign which may earn financial incentives for our municipality. • Community stormwater management education.
