  1. Cold Cut Systems

  2. The Vision “COBRA is the alternative way to fight fire. Imagine a scenario where you could fight a fire faster from outside the fire compartment, with less water, less damage to the environment and property, improve the survivability of casualties and significantly reduce the risk to fire fighters – Utopia, maybe; bold statements, yes; achievable, yes, absolutely.”  MartynEmberson, Chief Fire Officer of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service

  3. Societal Changes and Future Fire Fighting • Casualties in fire fighting demands new methods • Difficulty to recruit retained fire fighters • Challenges with congested traffic in urban areas • Higher buildings, tunnels, new infrastructure, new building constructions and materials leads to higher and new risks • Cost saving initiatives leads to smaller appliances with more flexibility • Higher pressure on residual values and focus on water damages • Pressure to sustain environment

  4. Cutting Extinguishing can be one solution • The Cobra offers an efficient intervention from a safe position – the outside • A Cobra attack requires 2-3 fire fighters and can be at the scene before the full BA crew. 1-2 minutes of Cobra intervention will make a dramatic effect and a safer environment for the BA (rescue situation) • The Cobra intervenes without ventilating and entering into the building • The Cobra fits perfectly on a Rapid Response appliance – 3.5 tons  fast, low cost and flexible • The Cobra uses 100% of 60 l/m instead of 5-10% of 600 l/m  No water damage and minimized environmental damages

  5. OWNERSHIP • Financially strong owners • Long term dedication • SAAB Ventures (SAAB Defence group) • IF Metall (major union in Sweden) • Risk Management Partner AB • Founder and Employees

  7. COBRA IN BRIEF • Production and development of jet cutting extinguisher since 1997 • The main system is the coldcutTMCOBRA • Patented method and system for cutting and extinguishing

  8. coldcutTMcobra – 500 UNITS DELIVERED 30 COUNTRIES WORLD WIDE

  9. Simple Concept – High Engineering • 250-300 bar at the pump • Water speed 200 m/s • Water 30-60 l/min • Abrasive 5% • Cutting speed - mild steel40 mm/min

  10. THE CONCEPT FAST RESPONSE – SAFE & HIGHLY EFFICIENT FIRE FIGHTING

  11. THE EFFECT

  12. 40 liters of water used

  13. APPLICATIONS • Fire & Rescue Services • Airports • Offshore • Navy • Maritime Search & Rescue SAR • Marine Salvage • Industry - Petroleum - Steel / Automotive - Chemical - Mining

  16. FIREFIGHT II PROJECT • EU Financed projects following Leonardo Da Vinci program • FireFight I focussed on on fire behaviour and individual firefighter • FireFight II focussed on tactics and incident commander • Developed an elearning • www.eufirefight.com • Members: CzechRepublic, Estonia, Finland, France, Spain, Sweden and the UK

  17. FIREFIGHT II PROJECT • Tactics and Strategy • Cobra, Thermal imaging cameras, PPV fans

  19. Cobra today • Focus on Method (not the product) • Method and tool for nearly all interventions • First Intervention (first unit on scene) • Training leads to acceptance and use from crew and commanders • Unique aspects – rapid, offensive and efficient intervention from safe position. Low water usage, low personnel usage, fast deployment etc • Safer Fire Fighting • Efficient Fire Fighting • Saving Environment

  20. Typical Interventions All compartment fires – ventilated or unventilated High-rise fires Roof/ceiling fires Difficult access/hidden fires Basement and underground fires Inter-agency deployments • Container fires • Vehicle fires • Chimney fires • Silo fires • Ducting/ventilation shafts • Insulated walls • Thatch fires • Property fires • And More

  21. CUTTING EXTINGUISHING CONCEPT - RESEARCH • Research about efficiency • Water mist • Inertion • Kinetic effects • Applied research – more than 1000 cases • Fire Fight II - an EU funded project

  22. Northampton case • Search for alternative methods initiated by unacceptably high number of fatalities in the UK • Strong senior level support • Add technology and method rather than replace leads to acceptance among crew • Highly dedicated implementation plan – 6 units first year (rather than buy one for evaluation) • High focus on training and methods • Cost cutting pressure but rational investments • Center of Excellence in Cobra training, SOPs and UK risk analysis etc conducted. • Cobra soon fitted on 19 out of 23 appliances
