  1. Science Fair • There will be a 6th grade science fair at Athey Creek. • During School: All the way from making to presenting • Required participation • Except a few exceptions, you will complete your project in pairs. • Will be graded.

  2. Science Fair • There is a district-wide middle school science expo in March, at Wood Middle School. • It’s a ½ day field trip • If interested, you can sign up for an opportunity to go. • Athey Creek can only send 50 projects (school wide) so we will have a judging process for those interested during the Athey Creek science fair. • It is used to select 13 projects from our school to go on to the Northwest Science Expo hosted at Portland State University in Spring.

  3. Topic Brainstorming • The first step towards completing a science fair project is to generate a good list of ideas from which to create science research projects. • We will worry later about what makes a good science research question. • Each group will have a paper and head it with your topic: • Animals and Ecology • Weathering and Erosion (Geology) • Weather and Climate • Sound and Light • Engineering (Sustainability)

  4. Sentence Starters • Using a marker, discuss possible research ideas with your tablemates. • SCRIBES: Record them on the paper, large enough so others can read what you wrote from across the room. • “I wonder…” • “How does ______________ affect __________?” • “What is the effect of _________________ on __________?” • “Can…” • “How can you make…” (engineering) • “You could design…” (engineering) • “Improve ________________ (everyday product or common item) by ___________________.” (engineering)
