  13. Monet tried to get his paintings accepted at the great Salon in Paris. This painting, Women in the Garden was not accepted. He used his favourite model for all four women here. Her name was Camille. They soon fell in love and married.

  14. Monet and his friends painted in a controversial style. In those days, people wanted to see paintings about battles or historical events. The Lion Hunt by Delacroix, 1861

  15. Monet and his friends were more interested how pretty something looked when the sun shone on it or how it reflected in water. A reporter called them “The Impressionists.” It was not meant as a compliment! That comment was made after viewing this picture.

  16. He continued painting, showing pictures of everyday life. He was able to show steam and dampness coming from a train engine. Gare Saint-Lazare, 1877

  18. When Monet was older people finally started to appreciate his paintings. He settled down in a town called Giverny and built a beautiful water garden.

  19. In the Orangerie in Giverny, Monet created a circular painting of his pond. The effect was intended to make the viewer feel they were in the middle of the pond. Some of these panels are 13 metres long (approx 40 feet)
