  1. Accessible Resource Project EDUC 50E3 Counselling Adolescents and Children by Cheryl Joyce

  2. I was wondering about identity… What does identity look like for a young person?

  3. I found an interesting study that examined what teens think of themselves. They were asked to describe themselves using metaphors.

  4. I was so impressed by what they said that I wanted to try this myself… With some slightly younger teens.

  5. I was fascinated! This is what they said:

  6. I am a Beach Ball. J. L.

  7. I am up-lifting, fun to be with and bright.

  8. I am a River. K. H.

  9. I can find the easiest path through life and I am resilient.

  10. I can go anywhere.

  11. I am a Wooden Door. M. D.

  12. You can not see through me. I am not predictable.

  13. But I can let certain people in and let them in completely. I choose the people I let through the door.

  14. I am a Computer. C.M.

  15. I have such a tangled mess of wires inside of me…

  16. …that no one really knows what I do.

  17. I am a Human Heart. K. H.

  18. I always work very hard and always do my best.

  19. … And I never stop working.

  20. I am a Video Game Controller. J. L.

  21. I am quick and responsive.

  22. I am a Briefcase. C.M.

  23. When you want to store your important secrets, I will hold them for you.

  24. I am a Rose. M. D.

  25. When I was a kid, I was kind of a troublesome bush of thorns, but as I grew…

  26. I became something beautiful.

  27. They all said something intriguing,, but it wasn’t what they said that made a difference. It was the sharing of these ideas that helped each of us learn something. Therefore, a great resource for discovering teens’ identity… Be Creative. Ask them.

  28. I wish to express special thanks to: Kelsey Holt Melissa Doary Joshua Lowery Callum Moscovitch For their help, their insight and their poetic words.

  29. Inspiration for this project came from: Larsen, D. J. & Larsen, J. E. (2004). “I Am a Puzzle": Adolescence as reflected in self-metaphors. Canadian Journal of Counselling. 38 (4). pp. 246-259.
