  1. Improving the AP Program In Lampasas ISD

  2. What is AP? • AP stands for Advanced Placement • AP is a program developed and administered by the College Board • AP courses are college level courses which are taught in high school • AP courses are designed to prepare students to take and ‘pass’ a corresponding AP Exam in the Spring for college credit

  3. What is AP? • AP courses are rigorous • AP teachers are required to submit a syllabus annually to the College Board for approval • AP differs from dual credit because the standards are uniform from school to school • To earn college credit most colleges require scores of 3, 4 or 5 on an AP Exam

  4. Why is AP so important? • A recent study showed that students taking AP courses and exams were much more likely to earn a college degree in four years. College Board, 2008. • For example, AP English Literature students had four-year college graduation rates that were 62% higher than students that had not taken AP English Literature.

  5. Why is AP so important? • A recent study showed that students who earned a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP Exam had higher first-year college grade point averages and were more likely to return for the second year of college than non-AP students of similar ability.College Board, 2009. • 31% of colleges and universities consider a student’s AP experience when making decisions about which students will receive scholarships.Crux Research, 2007

  6. College Readiness and AP • We are now being mandated by TEA to adhere a rigorous college readiness standard across our curriculum • TEC §39.053(c)(1)(B) requires that the performance rating schools receive be based on the percentage of students who meet the college readiness standard in addition to students who meet student progress requirements for the college readiness standard.

  7. What is Pre-AP? • Pre-AP stands for Pre-Advanced Placement • Pre-AP courses are offered from grade 6 through high school and are designed to prepare students for AP courses and exams. • Students in Pre-AP are given specific curriculum and strategies that align with the corresponding AP exams and courses

  8. So what can we do to improve our AP Program? • LISD will create a vertical team of Grade 6 – 12 Pre-AP/AP teachers in each of the four-core subject areas. • LISD will provide specific training to all Pre-AP/AP teachers in AP Strategies and course requirements • LISD will Improve student access and retention in the Pre-AP/AP Program • LISD will increase rigor and accountability in the Pre-AP/AP program. • LISD will help facilitate collaboration between Pre-AP and AP teachers.

  9. AP and Pre-AP Teachers will be trained • All AP/PAP- College Board Training – 30 hours • PAP Math and Science – Laying the Foundation – 30 hrs a year, 3 year commitment • All Core AP/PAP - G/T Training – 30 hrs

  10. Improve Rigor and Accountability • Students will take AP style tests (entered into Eduphoria) at specific times each year in Pre-AP and AP courses. • The School will monitor student performance on state assessments and will set high standards for students in Pre-AP and AP programs(commended level) • Teachers will use scaled scoring on rigorous assessments to help decrease a negative impact on student grades.

  11. Improve Access and Retention • Encourage students to challenge themselves by taking Pre-AP or AP classes • Learn the benefits of the AP Program • Be a source of support and encouragement for students who are struggling in AP or Pre-AP classes. • Avoid conversations that discourage students from taking on the challenge of AP or Pre-AP.

  12. What now? • Consider enrolling your child in AP or Pre-AP • Ask your guidance counselor or curriculum department for additional information
