  2. DOING BUSINESS ON THIS PROJECT A good manager, according to international projects standards is a person who; • Takes advantage of the natural ability, creativity and motivation of their staff. • Leads through the principles of co-operation and agreement.

  3. What will be the Everyday culture of this project ? Forget about .......... Focus on ................. Agree NOW ............. Each culture .......... Have ONLY 3 ..........

  4. DOING BUSINESS WITH THE SWEDS Relationships & Communication 1. Swedes rarely make decisions during initial meetings and as such, the first meeting that you have is likely to be fairly general and low key. 2. Swedes are direct communicators and as such, "Saying what you mean and meaning what you say" is both practiced and expected. 3. ‘Awkward silences’ are rarely seen as awkward in Sweden and as such, Swedes do not rush to fill conversation silences.

  5. DOING BUSINESS WITH THE SWEDS 4. Always bear in mind that the egalitarian nature of Sweden means that decisions and consensus are made across teams. 5. When trying to sell your ideas or suggestions focus on the overall benefits to the project. 6. Being a good listener is considered to be an important quality. In discussions with colleagues, you should use reason and base your suggestions on facts. Getting emotional when discussing a problem is considered rather inappropriate.

  6. DOING BUSINESS WITH THE FINNS Relationships & Communication 1. Finns are transactional and do not need long-standing personal relationships in order to conduct business. 2. The basic business style is formal - i.e. there is relatively little small talk and Finns prefer people to speak succinctly and to focus purely on business. 3. Finns do not require face-to- face contact and, quite comfortable using e- mail as a means of communication.

DOING BUSINESS WITH THE FINNS 4. Finns place a great value on speaking plainly and openly.What someone says is accepted at face value and this is a culture where "a persons word is their bond" and will be treated as seriously as a written contract, so verbal commitments are considered agreements. 5. Finns are direct communicators. Expect your colleagues to tell you what they think rather than what you want to hear. 6. Professional differences are not viewed as personal attacks.

  8. DOING BUSINESS WITH THE NORWEGIANS Relationships & Communication 1. Norwegians are transactional and do not need long-standing personal relationships in order to conduct business. 2. Relationships develop slowly and depend upon the other person being professional and meeting all agreed upon deadlines. 3. Their communication is straightforward and relies on facts.

  9. DOING BUSINESS WITH THE NORWEGIANS 4. They are conservative and deliberate speakers who do not appreciate being rushed. 5. Norwegians are not emotive speakers and their body language is subtle. 6. There is not much small talk. Norwegians prefer to get to the business discussion quickly.

Agree on conflict management style NOW

  12. An Effective Code of Co-operation 1. Help each other be right, not wrong. 2. Look for ways to make new ideas work, not for reasons they won’t. 3. If in doubt, check it out! Don’t make negative assumptions about each other. 4. Help each other win, and take pride in each other’s victories. 5. Speak positively about each other and about the project at every opportunity. 6. Maintain a positive mental attitude no matter what the circumstances. 7. Act with initiative and courage, as if it all depends on you. 8. Do everything with energy and enthusiasm; it’s contagious. 9. Don’t lose faith. 10. Have fun, while being professional and credible!
