  2. Site Demographics: • Tecumseh High School has maintained approximately 620 + students in grades 9-12 for some years now. There is a full time equivalency of 46.5 regular classroom teachers who are divided into the following area: Language Arts, Sciences, Social Studies, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, Instructional Technology & Vocational, Information Literacy/Library Media Specialist, and Special Education. In addition, the high school has 1 Principal, 1Assistant Principals, 1 Athletic Director, 2 Counselors, 3 Secretaries, 1 Library/Media Specialist, 7 Cooks, and 4 Custodians.

Language Arts: • Tecumseh High School offers: • English I, II, III, IV • Pre AP English I, Pre AP English II • AP English III, AP English IV • Speech, Creative Writing, Current Events, Yearbook, and Recreational Reading. • Students enrolled in Pre-AP and AP coursed can earn a 5-point A. Our teachers have aligned the PASS standards with their curriculum and they have developed curriculum maps for their content area. • The textbook materials being used currently include Holt, Elements of Literature, and Holt, Elements of Writing, as well as assorted novels and literature.

What we expect students to learn through Language Arts: • All PASS Standards and Objectives • Academic Vocabulary • Multiple word meanings • Techniques for using context clues to decipher unknown words • Development of writing skills and ability to express ideas in writing • Reading strategies targeting comprehension and understanding text

How we know when they have learned it through Language Arts: • Increased vocabulary and comprehension scores on quarterly assessments • Increased overall vocabulary scores on Explore, CRT, Plan, SAT, and ACT tests • Increased total reading score on Explore, CRT, Plan, SAT, and ACT tests with specific emphasis in textual reading comprehension and vocabulary • Implementation of academic vocabulary in student writing

How do we respond when they do not learn it?(L.A. cont.) • Implement academic vocabulary practice • Integrate academic vocabulary in word wall activities, word webs, word of the week, lexicons, computer activities, etc. • Expose students to a variety of reading genres • Incorporate specific reading strategies designed to assist in the comprehension of non-fiction, content area text • Provide additional instruction through peer tutors, mentors, volunteers, etc. • Targeted skill practice with technology programs (focus on remediation of skills)

Math: • Tecumseh High School currently offers: • Introduction to Algebra • Algebra I • Geometry • Math of Finance • Algebra II • Trigonometry • AP Calculus • Introduction of Algebra is designed to meet the needs of those students whose skills will not allow them success in Algebra I. The course content includes a brief review of Pre-Algebra skills, but will also include concepts of Algebra in the context of real life situations. Many topics of this course overlap with Algebra I to help ensure student success at the high school level. The textbooks being used are as follows: Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry use Holt; Math of Finance course utilizes Mathematics of Money by South-Western

What we expect students to learn through Math: • All PASS Standards and Objectives • Academic Vocabulary (Comprehension, Use, and Application of Math terms) • Understanding and use of Algebraic formulas and their function • Understanding and use of Geometric formulas and their function • Critical thinking using mathematical applications, analysis, and synthesis • We would like students to leave our school with math skills they can use in life whether in personal business, work environment, or college. We want students to be able to use higher order thinking skills to analyze situations and solve problems. Students should be able to transfer knowledge and use current skills to work with unfamiliar areas. We would also like to see our students performing at or above state averages on ACT and course exit exams.

How we know when they have learned it through Math: • Increased percentage of students scoring satisfactorily on benchmark assessments and on state assessments • Increase grade level equivalents on Explore, Plan, SAT, and ACT assessments • Increased total Math scores on assessments and in subject areas – Math related • Implementation of academic math vocabulary in writing and discussion activities

How do we respond when they do not learn it?(Math cont.) • Implement a subject wide math remediation computer program – Odyssey and A+ • Greater implementation and emphasis on math academic vocabulary • Targeted skill practice through computer programs • Department meetings targeting specific Math goals, objectives, and interventions

Using Technology through the Math Department: • Classroom Performance System (E-Instruction): Assessment of student performance and EOI preparation • In addition, scientific and/or graphing calculator technology is integrated into each course beginning in Algebra I • The math department also makes use of this technology through our Teachers’ as Advisors program.
