  2. Survey • Survey times Wednesday afternoon 3-5pm, Saturday afternoon 3-5 pm • (note: Survey done in July – summer month with temperature in triple digits) • Utilize 2 sources of secondary analysis • Contact with 2 members of the community

Education • PUBLIC SCHOOL • Charlotte Mecklenburg School (CMS) Public schools for this area go to Reid Park Academy. • Reid Park is a Kindergarten – 8th grade school • Population In 2011 was 577 students enrolled: 90.8% African American, 0.3% Asian, 4.2 % Hispanic, 2.6% Multiracial, and 2.1% American Indian or White. • 92% of the students qualify for the free lunch program – A program that helps to insure that all children get a lunch provided to them. • Reid Park offers the Bright Beginnings program to pre –K, 4 year olds. This programs is designed to get youngsters an environment for learning literacy in preparation for Kindergarten. Specific income qualifications must be met for enrollment. • Performance: End of Grade scores show that Reid Park score 37.6% in reading compared to the 70.7% state average, and 61.9% in Math compared to the 82.4 % state average. • This school requires uniforms, and has 18 trailers outside of the school • North Carolina sets goals that schools must meet to make Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal No child left behind mandate. Reid Park did not make adequate yearly progress, meeting 7 of the 13 targets. • The rising 8th graders feed into the Harding University High school • Harding University School • Population 682. • Last year received the Honor school of Excellence for high growth in Learning

  4. Education Continued…. • PRIVATE SCHOOL • A private school option is Brookstone School. It is a Christian based Kindergarten through 5th grade school. • 85% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch program. • For the 2009-10 school year, the expense budget was $641,000. Approximately 7% of this budget in student tuition and fees and the remainder comes from donations from individual supporters, churches and foundations. • Class Average/Reading Grade Equivalent= 7.8 • 80th Percentile • Class Average/Math Grade Equivalent= 7.9 • 82nd Percentile • Basic Battery Grade Equivalent= 8.9 • 81st Percentile

  5. Free Breakfast and Lunch - CMS Child Nutrition is sponsoring a summer food service plan (SFSP). For kids 18 years and younger, several school including Reid Park Academy will serve a breakfast and lunch June 15-Aug 12. This program is funded through the United States Department of Agriculture. • 2 Day care centers were observed

Recreation • Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation has 2 Centers in the immediate area: • Amay James Recreational Center (which has a full size gymnasium, multipurpose rooms and showers, youth tee ball, boy scouts, adult aerobics, FIT CITY walker and Spades Club) is currently closed. • Southview Recreational Center has a full size gymnasium, fitness center, multipurpose rooms, indoor playroom, game room, computer lab, Salvation Army Boys and Girls Summer Camp Program, Catering Kitchen, Karate, Adult Programs (Women with Will Power), Support Groups, and Senior Programs. This Center is a “safe house” and in located in the back of the Little Rock Neighborhood • LIBRARY • The West Boulevard Public Library is less than 1 mile from these neighborhoods. The library offers Preschool Story time, Musical Interludes, Manga Club and has a computer lab.
