  5. Life-saving canaries • Don’t write all this • Coal mines are breeding grounds for methane and carbon monoxide, which are hazardous to human health, as well as conducive to deadly explosions. Before methane or carbon monoxide detectors existed, miners brought canaries down into coal mines with them. If a canary died, it was a sign of the presence of noxious gases and meant it was time to high tail it out of there.

N and Iso Alkanes • alkanes that form a continuous unbranched chain are called normal or n-alkanes • Give exs • iso-alkanes have one branched C (on the second C) • 4 kinds of carbons • Primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary • Normal alkanes have only primary and 2ndy C’s • Iso-alkanes have at least one 3rd or 4th degree C • Ex: isopropyl acohol

  10. Naming Alkanes • IUPAC naming rules! • Find longest continuous C chain, give it a base name (ex: propane, pentane) • Identify side groups • halogens-chloro, bromo, iodo, fluoro • alkyl groups-methyl, ethyl, propyl • Assign prefixes, alphabetize, use lowest #’s • Naming cycloalkanes

  11. Chemical Reactions of Alkanes •   Oxidation=combustion=burning • General pattern for oxidation reactions is: • HC + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + heat • EX: methane + oxygencarbon dioxide + HOH

  15. The 2nd Chemical Rxn of Alkanes • 2.    Substitution-sometimes you can sub a halogen for a hydrogen in an alkane making an alkyl halide • Ex rxn on board • Alkyl halides are very reactive • Represented by "RX" (not "rxn")

  16. Specific alkyl halides: • Bromomethane or methyl bromide • Berries from the west coast are made by forcing CH3Br into the soil • ground is covered w/plastic to keep gas from escaping, then crops are planted • Huge berries are b/c CH3Br kills worms, fungi, dogs, cats, & Mexicans • Mexicans?!

  18. “Chloromethanes” • CH3Cl-chloromethane-a good liquid solvent • CH2Cl2-dichloromethane-A good refrigerant • CHCl3-trichloromethane (chloroform) • Was once used in non-alcoholic pediatric cough syrups • CCl4-carbon tetrachloride • Excellent spot remover for dry cleaning, but carcinogenic, killed Chinese laundry workers
