  1. The influence of mycorrhiza on antioxidantenzymesactivity and flavonoidsynthesis in Allium cepa cultivars. Inoculation of plants with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is useful in areas poor in minerals. Evaluation of the effectiveness of mycorrhizal fungi in cultivation of Polish onion varieties. Mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants were cultivated in sterile substratum under greenhouse conditions. Flavonoid concentrations were determined by GC/MS. To determine SOD activity photochemical reduction of NBT to formazan was used. The activity of thiaminemonophosphatesynthase (TMPS) was characterized by HPLC. Mycorrhizalcolonisation was assessedaccording to Trouvelot method. AIM OF STUDY Flavonoid concentrations RESULTS Biomass Onions Significant increase in concentrations of quercetin, apigenin and kaempferol were observed in mycorrhizal cvs. Wolska and Kuba. Leaves Significant increase in concentrations ofquercetin and kaempferol were observed in leaves of mycorrhizal cvs. Wolska and Sochaczewska; Wolska also showed higher apigenin concentrations. In leaves of nonmycorrhizal cv. Kuba increase in flavonoidconcentrations was found. The highest increase in biomass due to the presence of mycorrhiza was found in cvs. Kuba and Wolska. M+ : plantsinoculated with G. intraradicesM- : noninoculatedplants Antioxidant activity M+ M- M+ M- In mycorrhizal cvs. Wolska and Ishikura activity of SOD and TMPS increased in comparison tononmycorrhizal plants. Take homemessages • inoculation with G. intraradicesresults in significant biomass increase in plants; • the effect of mycorrhizainoculation on onionvariety and itsflovonoidconcentrationsdepends on cultivar and environmentalconditions; • mycorrhizal inoculation stimulates activity of antioxidant enzymes.
