  7. Key Stage 4 Curriculum In the White Paper, “The Importance of Teaching”, published on 24 November 2010, the Secretary of State announced the introduction of the English Baccalaureate. What is the English Baccalaureate? How will this affect my child’s option choices?

  8. The English Baccalaureate It is not a qualification in itself and at present there are no plans for a certificate to be issued to a student who successfully completes the English Baccalaureate. However it does recognise students’ achievement in the published league tables across a core of selected academic subjects in getting A*-C passes in 5 GCSE subjects: • English GCSE • Mathematics GCSE • Two Science GCSEs • A Modern Foreign Language GCSE • A Humanities GCSE

  15. Vocational Learning – what’s new? The Education Secretary Michael Gove’s response to the Wolf Report stated: “It is an essential part of a broad curriculum. Just as much as academic education, vocational learning provides invaluable opportunities for young people to develop their potential and expand what they know, understand and can do; and to gain recognition for that learning which allows them to progress.”

  16. Vocational Learning • It engages pupils who are better demonstrating what they have learned through what they can do. • It also develops “competency” and “application” skillsin those learners who may already possess a strongacademic flair. • It has an essential part to play in bridging the skills gap by combining work-related knowledge and skills-based assessment.

  17. We ensure … that every student has only the best vocational qualifications in our KS4 offer, those which will continue to be recognised by the Department for Education, FE institutions and Employers, and which therefore ensure they can progress to further study or into a job.

  18. How BTEC Vocational Qualifications are changing to meet the reforms New specifications for 8 areas with teaching fromSeptember 2012 - Applied Science, Art and Design, Business, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Information and Creative Technology, Performing Arts, Sport. The way in which these qualifications are assessed is changing: External Assessment of 25% Teacher Assessment minimum 75% Teacher Assessment still to be sampled externally Other areas will change in September 2013

  19. Choices • Broad and balanced curriculum • Range • Enjoyment • Suits your learning style • Fits with your possible career pathway
