  1. Integration

  2. Biblical foundation • What are some observable signs of a person’s religion when you look at them? • Take the quiz on Metro.co.uk • What does a Christian look like? Galatians 3: Children of God 23Before the coming of this faith,j we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. 26So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

  3. Definition of integration (p. 140) • Integration is the process of adapting 2 or more different elements of a society in order to become one. These elements include: • Social status • Race • Ethnicity • Religion • Language • Norms • Values

  4. Criteria of integration (p. 140) • > physical presence • Solidarity and feeling of togetherness • Majority agrees (consensus) • Fulfill each other’s needs • Norms and values have a long life, not easily changed, consistent

  5. How would the following factors affect the process of integration? • Discuss the following with a partner: • Homogeneity • Size of a society • Geography of a country: desert, mountains, archipelago • Technology Now see page 141 with your partner and take notes on #1-4 (about what can speed up or slow down the process of integration.)

  6. Assignment 3 • Predict which country (or countries) would experience integration quickly and give at least 2 reasons why. • As a class, we will now choose which country (one person /continent) each of you will focus on for Assignment 3. Central America: Chloe (Costa Rica) North America: Darren (USA) South America: Australia: Lyn Asia: Natasha (Korea), Eason (Japan) Africa: Vicky (South Africa) Europe: Hazkel (France), Karin (Italy)

  7. Warm up What factors speed up or slow down integration? List as many factors as you can remember from yesterday **without looking at your notes!**

  8. 3 Types of Social Integration(p. 141-142) • Normative Integration: Naturally united because of shared norms • Ex: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika • Functional Integration: United because of mutual dependence (different people/ethnic groups fulfill a needed function in the society) • Bugis fish, Minang sell the fish • Coercive Integration: United by force (violence) from an authority • Prisoners are poorly treated in a prison and unite against the abusive guards

  9. Identify the type of integration • Honesty is the best policy. • Leave the counting to the mathematicians. • If verbal negotiation doesn’t work, use physical force. • You are my people and I am your king, so you shall obey me or else! • Your only limit is you.

  10. Discuss If this 11th grade IPS class represented a society, what strengths does each of you possess that would create mutual dependence?

  11. 2 ways that integration happens(p. 142-143) Assimilation Acculturation 2 cultures come into contact (through migration, globalization, geographic mobility) They mix to become one, considering strengths and weaknesses. Their cultures combine for a mixed culture, but each original culture maintains (mempertahankan) distinct characteristics. • 2 cultures come into contact with each other. • They mix to become one, reducing differences between individuals. • There is a totally new culture. • Leads to high integration, so no differences can be seen between individuals.

  12. Acculturation Questions for discussion What are some strengths/ weaknesses of foreign cultures that have been accepted/rejected by Indonesians when Indonesians come into contact with these cultures? German? Japanese? Chinese? See page 144. Identify which factors are internal and which factors are external in the section: “Faktor-Faktor Pendorong Integrasi Sosial.” • 2 cultures come into contact (through migration, globalization, geographic mobility) • They mix to become one, considering strengths and weaknesses. • Their cultures combine for a mixed culture, but each original culture maintains (mempertahankan) distinct characteristics.

  13. Exit • Answer the questions from the book on p. 145 at the bottom
