  2. Purpose And Goals • To increase the level of literacy and intellectual development of the children in the targeted area. • To give technical instruction to increase skill level • To provide technical tools so that the local population can join the main stream society

  3. About VARUN • Voluntary Association for Rural Upliftment & Networking (VARUN) is a self-motivated, social and non-profit organization. Varun started it activities in 1999. • Outline: • Schools in (5 villages) Shahpur, Dobahi, Pathrour, Sukhdeopur,Hathini. • Self help group (women micro finance). - Introduce Organic Farming (Nursery, Seed Bank) • Library (in 5 villages) • Permanent structures in Shahpur, Dobahi and Lerha. • FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 1976) applied in February 2005, until then, donations go through Asha-Varanasi • People: Dr.S.P.Singh (PhD, Agriculture), Mr. A.K.Singh (Journalist)

  4. Current Status of teachers Timing of School : July to March : 09.30 to 3.30 P.M. April to June : 7.00 to 12.00 P. M.

  5. Number of students Total Primary school students: 195 Total Junior school students: 68

  6. Performance in examination 2009 –> 15 students. (8 male + 7 female) Details in progress report.

  7. Women Empowerment • 4 years of activity has resulted in around 100 women groups of 10-15 each • 5 days Dharna at District Magistrate Office against to show their resentment against miss handlings of wages (under SJSY Yojana) • The whole scheme was organized and supported by VARUN • SHG could save around 22000/-. Take and replay loans from this account. Could support someone’s education.

  8. 2008-2009 Evaluation updates • Self-sustenance of schools (Shahpur & Horila). Handed over to Govt. and should have started in October 09. Currently, there has been not been any appointment of teacher in Shahpur. • Started new school in Hathini and Sukhdevpur in July 09. • Training women in stitching. Program started in October ’09 instead of starting it during last 6 months. Asking for 6 months for results. • 15 children cleared Std V. 8 students from 4 villages to appear in 2010. • Constantly trying to update people about RTI/NREGA. Success stories to be shared.

  14. Emergency Budget 09-10 • Rs. 1,78,525/- • Expenses covered for 6months from July to Dec. • Covered salaries and educational material.

  15. Additional requirements (2009-2010) • Shahpur center’s school, taken over by Govt., not in operation at the end of Oct. • Situation is not improving. • Need to cover salaries of 2 teachers for 12 months instead of 4 months as proposed initially. (8 more months.) Additionalamount: 19,200/- (1200 x 2 teachers x 8 months) Total amount: 4,28,625 + 19,200 = Rs.4,47,825/-
