  1. Objective: I will review plot elementsso I am able to identify themwithin a narrative poem.Key Vocab: Plot, Narrative PoemEssential Question:What defines a hero?JOURNAL: What if you were a famous celebrity like Casey? What would you be famous for (it doesn’t have to be baseball), and how would you handle the fame? Be specific.

  2. Let’s review plot… PRE-ASSESSMENT: On the plot diagram in front of you, define each of its parts. This should be review from last year… do your best.

  3. Exposition The beginningportion of the story when characters, setting, and background information is introduced. Example: In Finding Nemo, we are introduced to Nemoand Marlin who live in the anemone in the ocean. The father and son fight sometimes because Marlin is controlling.

  4. Rising Action The conflict (or problem) faced by the protagonist (main character) is introduced. Suspense builds as the main character tries to solve the problem. Example:Nemo is captured and placed in a fish tank in a dentist office. Marlin must find him, but he continues to have problems with sharks, an absent minded friend Dori, etc.

  5. Climax (Turning Point) The highest point of suspense OR when a problem is finally solved or understood. Example: Marlin finds the dentist office’s address, but Nemo might be flushed by the toilet… so lots of suspense!!!

  6. Falling Action The reader learns what happens and how the characters are affected. Example: Marlin and Nemo are getting along now as father and son. They compromise.

  7. Resolution The end of the story. Loose ends are tied up. Usually when the theme (or message) is clarified… Marlin and Nemo learn to be patient and flexible, and Marlin lets Nemo have more freedom.

  8. Create a plot diagram of your own. With a partner, create a plot diagram that shows the sequence of events and suspense in the poem “Casey at the Bat.”

  9. Pop Quiz Create a plot diagram and label each part correctly. You are responsible for knowing these definitions next week.
