  2. Who is he? The picture to the left is the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners • Albert Sherman Osborn was the first American prominent in the field of forgery detection • He was the first President of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners. • He held the position for four years. • This group became a formal association in 1942.

  3. How He Started • He became interested in the study of penmanship when he was attending State College at Lansing. • As a teacher he became interested to the identification of handwriting, typewriting, paper, ink, and to the many questions about contested documents. • Osborn was born in 1858 grew up in a farm in Grass Lake, Michigan.

  4. During his time, attorneys would consult a local penmanship teacher to ask for opinions about the genuineness of a signature. • Once he became a highly qualified teacher,  lawyers began submitting questioned document problems to him • His books, Questioned Documents, The Problem of Proof, The Mind of the Juror and Questioned Document Problems master and codify the information necessary for identifying styles of handwriting and typescript, and for dating papers, inks, and writing instruments. 2 of Osbourn’s books.
