  1. The 80s:BUSH1989-1993 DOMESTIC POLICY

  2. AFRICAN AMERICANS • The worst urban violence in the 1900s occurred in the 1992 south central Los Angeles rioting • The major racial disturbances of the 1990s occurred in Los Angeles • One of the major problems affecting African –Americans in the late twentieth century was the growing gap between an affluent black middle class and the poor inner cities

  3. The Bush administration was troubled by a demand that he take action on cultural issues like abortion • the right-to-life movement = members of the New Right who campaigned against abortion (late 1980s and early 1990s) • In 1989, the Supreme Court ruled that a state may prohibit any institution receiving state funds from performing abortions in the case of Webster v. Reproductive Health Services • permitted states to place some restrictions on abortion • The most serious domestic problem that faced the Bush administration , causing the erosion of its popularity before the 1992 election was failure to bring an end to the 1990 recession

  4. Clarence Thomas • Both the achievements and the limits of the progress of women on the issue of sexual harassment were evident in the sensational controversy in 1991 over a Supreme Court nominee Thomas • The explosive Senate hearings that nearly prevented Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas from being confirmed involved charges that Thomas was guilty ofsexual harassment

  5. 1992 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

  6. In 1992, all of the following men were on the November presidential ballot • George Bush • Ross Perot • Bill Clinton • All of the following issues or developments in the 1992 political campaign revealed popular disgust with incumbents • the intractable budgetary crisis • the stagnant economy • the revelation that many House members had written bad checks from their accounts in a private House “bank” • Ross Perot’s winning of nearly 20% of the vote • In the 1992 presidential election Ross Perot had the best showing of any third party or independent candidate since Theodore Roosevelt in 1912 • The primary issue that enabled Bill Clinton to defeat President Bush and Ross Perot in the 1992 election was Bush’s management of a seriously slumping economy
