Project Overview • 8th Grade Reading Students - “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” • Landisville Middle School, Lancaster area • Create a wiki to post a glossary, KWL Chart, and resources for future students • http://boyinthestripedpajamas.wikispaces.com/ • Hold video conference with Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington, DC) to get further information on genocide • Hold video conference with Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County to speak with a survivor

Project Goal • Students will create a product demonstrating their understanding of what genocide is, that genocidal activity in the world persists, and what they, as individuals, can do to discourage discrimination and promote tolerance.  • This product will be in the form of a wiki that will include the following areas: Glossary, Discussion, Resources, Resolutions.

Survey Results • Very positive response • Student expectations of the VC • Student preparedness for project • Student satisfaction with the technology • Some students (37%) felt that they would have liked more of an opportunity to interact with the videoconference site and several students noted that they needed more time in the lab to work on the wiki portion of the project • Most importantly, close to 90% of the students felt that their knowledge of the Holocaust had improved!

Lessons Learned • Make sure the connecting site is associated with Internet2 • Using an agenda and sending questions prior toVC is very helpful • Bring backup batteries and power cords for cameras and video recorders • Get approval for photos prior to posting on web site • Don’t overestimate your students capabilities • The Holocaust was enough; they didn’t get to modern-day genocides • Importance of having great communications with teacher

  12. Next Project • Project 2 – • Picture This! Fitting In, Standing Out • ESL Students will collaboratively create a design theme and an implementation plan for a mural celebrating pride in diversity and their unique culture while promoting their connectedness in the multiple communities within which they participate, e.g., cultural, school, neighborhood, etc.
