Ephesians Intro • Audience: The church at Ephesus (verse 1:2) • Purposes: • To tell this church that he (Paul) prays for them and gives praise for them (verse 1:15-16) • To remind them of their redemption by Christ (verse 2:11-13) • To remind them of the unity in Christ’s church (verse 2:18-22) • That the Gentiles and Israel are joint heirs in Jesus (verse 3:4-6) • To urge them to “live up to” their calling (verse 4:1) • To tell us the means and ways of Godly living (many verses)

Ephesus • Ephesus is in modern-day Turkey • During the time of Paul’s writing, it was under Roman rule • It was also one of the largest cities of its time (among Rome, Alexandria, and Antioch) • It was used as a base for Paul from which to do his missions • It was located at a convergence to the land routes between Colassae&Laodicea, Sardis&Galatia, and Smyrna • It was famed for its temple to Artemis (Diana), a Greek(Roman) goddess • This temple was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world

  8. When was Ephesians written? • Ephesians is thought to be written around 61-62AD • Paul was in prison (probably in Rome) while he wrote Ephesians (verses: 3:1, 4:1, 6:20) • Tychicus delivers this letter to Ephesus (verse 6:22)

What does Chapter 1 say? • We are blessed with every spiritual blessing (v1:3) • What spiritual blessings do you have? • He chose us before the creation of the world to be saved by His Son (v1:4-6) • We have redemption, and forgivess of sins through the blood of Jesus (v1:7) • He has brought everything together under one head-Christ (v1:10) • What do you think when you read this about God’s Will concerning you (if you believe)?

What does Chapter 1 say? • The Gentile believers were included in salvation by hearing the Word (v1:13) • Why is it important to hear the Word? • We are marked with a seal, the Holy Spirit, who is a “deposit guaranteeing our inheritance” (v1:14) • How can we respond to this guarantee? • Paul shares his concern by his prayer for the Ephesians (v1:17) • Do you regularly pray for the spiritual welfare of others? • Paul wants them to be wise about God’s power in saving them (v1:19) and about the authority given to Christ (v1:21-23) • Does the authority of Christ give you comfort?

  11. Forgiveness • Ephesians 1:7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace • Colossians 1:14in whom we have redemption,[a] the forgiveness of sins.

All under Christ • Ephesians 1:10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. • Colossians 1:20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
