  1. EMBER A European Multimedia Bioinformatics Educational Resource

  2. EMBER Consortium • University of Manchester - developer • SIB – developer • SANBI – developer • CMBI – developer/evaluator • IMB – developer/evaluator • ETI –developer* • IGC – evaluator • EBI – evaluator • BEN – evaluator • RIGEB – evaluator

  3. Manchester Coordination • Existing on-line bioinformatics practical called BioActivity • in use world-wide • including in-house courses

  4. Manchester Coordination • Existing text-book • in use world-wide • including in-house courses • Ch.9 is BioActivity

  5. The Project • EMBER will • collate, evaluate & amalgamate existing EMBnet materials • revise & update these where necessary • Use the updated and new material to • develop a new text-book • extend the Web practical (BioActivity) • develop a parallel (Web-independent) course on CD-ROM • EMBER will be suitable for delivery • as part of conventional face-to-face courses • or in stand-alone, self-paced settings (e.g., the workplace)

  6. The Beginning • EMBER commenced on 1 May 2001 • will run for 2 years • support 2 RA at Manchester, 1 RA (1yr) at SIB • All we have to do now is • create a professional version of BioActivity • create a Web-independent version on CD-ROM • write another text book…

  7. WP9: Management WP1: Review of skill shortages WP2: Formulation of new syllabus WP3: Material unification & assessment tools WP4: Review of IPR WP5: Manuscript & course revisions WP6: Website production WP7: CD-ROM production WP8: Trials, evaluation & feedback

  8. Sept.01 Feb.02 May.01 Nov.02 Oct.02 Jan.02

  9. The Story So Far • With much difficulty, hired the following staff • Jane Mabey (temporarily – since 1 May) • Giles Velarde (since 1 September) • Ioannis Selimas (since 28 August) • WP1 - Review on skills shortage • D1 - publication in CAL-laborate on behalf of the consortium • http://science.uniserve.edu.au/pubs/callab/vol6/mabey.html • WP2 - Formulation of new syllabus • D2 - proposed syllabus &bookplan • established a Web-site (http://www.bioinf.man.ac.uk/ember) from which documents & project progress can be viewed

  10. The Story So Far • WP3 - Material unification & evaluation tools • D3 - new sections of BioActivity being developed (to cover gene prediction, phylogenetics, structure prediction (modelling/ threading), etc.) • D4 - Evaluation tools • Considering 2 types of tools for: (1) evaluation of product & (2) student self-assessment. These will consider use of the products (e.g., look & feel, navigation, etc.) & knowledge gained by student (before & after assessment). Questionnaires are being designed.

  11. ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION TOOLS • General evaluation of the practical • (both students & lecturers) • layout, presentation of information, • structure etc. • (supervising of the actual sessions) • (meet with the students to discuss) • Before/after evaluation • of the practical • questions on various subjects • covered by the practical - • compare the two outputs • feedback from lecturers Part of the CD-ROM • Assessment of the student • end-of-section questions • and problem solving • multiple choice Evaluation of the means to reach the target Was the product delivered successfully? Final adjustments Final adjustments FINAL PRODUCT

  12. European Multimedia EMBER Bioinformatics Educational Resource EMBER European Multimedia Bioinformatics Educational Resource The Story So Far • WP5 - Manuscript & course revisions • D6 - Work in progress at UMan on a glossary • other Nodes will need to deliver chapters by Christmas • Other work: • ProActe factsheet & logo • logs being established for the EMBER Web site for evaluation & reporting purposes

  13. What Happens Next • Next month, ETI must begin WPs 6 & 7 • i.e., to generate the Web- & CD-ROM-based materials to a professional standard • While this is ongoing, evaluators must consider WP8 • i.e., to establish courses to test the new products • Timing is critical • any volunteers gratefully embraced!

  14. Other News • UMBER just became Marie Curie training site in bioinformatics • Fellowships available for 3-12 months • Fellows can participate in taught modules on the MSc • Or they can undertake short research projects • Anyone interested in having a student placed at Manchester, let me or Erich Bornberg-Bauer know ebb@bioinf.man.ac.uk,attwood@bioinf.man.ac.uk
