1. “ Some wounded thing, by the evidence a large animal, had thrashed about in the underbrush; the jungle weeds were crushed down and the moss was lacerated; one patch of weeds was stained crimson.” When Rainsford sees the jungle he doesn’t just see what's there, he sees the unseen. Rainsford revels just how great of a hunter he is. He looks at the crushed underbrush and says the evidence leads him to believe it was made by a large animal. This also leads him to know other people are near by. The blood is semi-fresh, it has not had time to soak in or wash away. So who ever killed it was still around.

2. “A big tree with a thick trunk and outspread branches was nearby, and taking care to leave not the slightest mark, he climbed up into the crotch and stretching out on one of the broad limbs” Rainsford has had a 3 hour head start as the rules of Zaroffs game allow him. When Zaroff almost finds Rainsford he just smiles turn and walks away. This moment reviles something we have yet to see from Rainsford, fear. Also from the beginning of the story we see Rainsford say animals don’t have feelings when their being hunted. When the tables are turned he becomes the animal.
