  2. Introduction • The leadership crisis • Gallup Q12 • Engagement • Leading for engagement Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. Jack Welch, Former CEOGeneral Electric

  3. Crisis of Leadership • 65% of workers receive no recognition for good work • Lack of appreciation: Number 1 reason people leave a job

  4. Crisis of Leadership Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership. Colin PowellFormer U.S. Secretary of State & Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

  7. Gallup Research: Quantifying the Crisis U.S. Workforce Cost: $350 billion annually in lost productivity

  8. Gallup Q12: Engagement Predicts Success A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better. Jim RohnEntrepreneur & Consultant

  9. What is Leadership?

  10. Why do they follow? No institution can possibly survive if it needs geniuses…to manage it. It must be organized…to get along under a leadership composed of average human beings. Peter DruckerAuthor & Consultant

  11. Gallup Q12: why they follow • Provide basic tools • Listen • Empathize & care • Encourage & mentor • Communicate & challenge • Create a shared vision

  12. Provide Basic Tools • Q12 Question:I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right.

  13. Listen I only wish I could find an institute that teaches people how to listen. Business people need to listen at least as much as they need to talk. Too many people fail to realize that real communication goes in both directions. Lee Iacocca, Former CEO Chrysler Corp. To say that a person feels listened to means a lot more than just their ideas get heard. It's a sign of respect. It makes people feel valued. Deborah TannenProfessor of Linguistics Georgetown University • Q12 Question:At work my opinions seem to count.

  14. Listen • Q12 Question:At work my opinions seem to count. June Rokoff, Senior VP for Software Development at Lotus credits her success in turning around the company's position in the software industry to building a team that listens: she made listening the culture of her team. Glen RifkinNew York Times To learn through listening, practice it naively and actively. Naively means that you listen openly, ready to learn something, as opposed to listening defensively, ready to rebut. Listening actively means you acknowledge what you heard and act accordingly. Betsy SandersFormer VP & General Manager, Nordstrom

  15. Empathy & Leadership The salient discovery is that certain things leaders do – specifically, exhibit empathy and become attuned to others’ moods – literally affect both their own brain chemistry and that of their followers. • Daniel Goleman& Richard Boyatzis, Social Intelligence & the Biology of Leadership, Harvard Business Review (September 1, 2008).

  16. Empathy & Leadership The salient discovery is that certain things leaders do – specifically, exhibit empathy and become attuned to others’ moods – literally affect both their own brain chemistry and that of their followers. Indeed, researchers have found that the leader-follower dynamic is not a case of two (or more) independent brains reacting consciously or unconsciously to each other. Rather, the individual minds become, in a sense, fused into a single system. • Daniel Goleman& Richard Boyatzis, Social Intelligence & the Biology of Leadership, Harvard Business Review (September 1, 2008).

  17. We believe that great leaders are those whose behavior powerfully leverages the system of brain interconnectedness. • Daniel Goleman& Richard Boyatzis, Social Intelligence & the Biology of Leadership, Harvard Business Review (September 1, 2008).

  18. Empathy

  19. Empathize & Care • Q12 Question:My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person. • Q12 Question: I have a best friend at work.

  20. Encourage & Mentor • Q12 Question: In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work. • Q12 Question: There is someone at work who encourages my development. The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant. Max De Pree, Former CEOHerman Miller

  21. Encourage & Mentor • Q12 Question: In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress. • Q12 Question: This last year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow. If you don't understand that you work for your mislabeled 'subordinates,' then you know nothing of leadership. You know only tyranny. Dee Hock, Founder & Former CEO, VISA

  22. Communicate & Challenge • Q12 Question: I know what is expected of me at work.

  23. Create a Shared Vision • Q12 Question: At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day. • Q12 Question: The mission or purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important. Vision is not enough. It must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs. Vaclav HavelFirst President of the Czech Republic

  24. Create a Shared Vision • Q12 Question: My associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality work. The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Malcolm GladwellAuthor
