  2. Readying for the play: “The Six Second Rule” • The most important six seconds of a football play happen just BEFORE the QB begins his cadence…how you prepare yourself during this time will determine the success of the play! • “The Six Second Rule” is a simple mental routine that each position has that allows them to do their thinking before the play so that they can be prepared, confident, and aggressive once the play begins, and be ready for anything that might happen! • The actual routine varies by position, but its basic elements are: • WHAT IS MY JOB (or basic assignment) on this play? • What, if anything, should I do with my ALIGNMENT to help me do this job? • What is the DEFENSE’s basic alignment? • Based on the defense I see, what will my FIRST 2-3 STEPS off the ball be? • What ADJUSTMENTS might I have to make, based on the defense, to get my job done? 17. 1 Instructional 4 Instructional S S ## MUST see LB in front of Post Curl! Danger player! C M TRUST TEMPO DISCIPLINE PREPARATION SHARED RESPONSIBILITY 1 route:“CURL” Attack 2d defender’s inside leg, sit at 10! 4 yd ‘Speed break’ to 12 10 V V V V SPRINT to 8! • Accelerate through break! • Gain depth! If you don’t get theball by the time you reach the #s, turn up the sideline! O O I I • Possible Arrow off Tight U by pre-read/situation.. “161” Shown • Work the Post Curl off the 5th step to Sit to BS Seam Rd BS OUTS:“Slasher”. Normal odd-numbered backside rules. BS INS:“Hunter”. Normal odd-numbered backside rules. FS INS:ARROW. Attack defender’s outside shoulder, break downhill off 2d/3d step, gain depth. Look for ball quickly! FS MID:SIT. Your job is to occupy the 2nd short defender. Run right at his inside leg, hook up and present your numbers to the QB when you’ve reached 10 yards. Can slide to open window inside or SLIGHTLY outside once you’ve hooked up. FS OUTS:POST CURL. Split bottom of #s (Hash +3). Sprint to 8, make a 4 yard speed break toward the Post, At 12, burst/lunge & ‘DRUMROLL REDIRECT,’ accelerate through the open lane back to a depth of 10 yards. Slide to open window. QB:Based on down/distance and/or pre-read, may ‘Tight U’ to Arrow on time. Otherwise, 5 angle pop-up, use eyes and shoulders to influence flat defender to widen with Arrow, drill the Curl through the open window as he presents his numbers, feeling the Danger player in your peripheral vision. If cut off, think Sit (in Trips) to Arrow turning up or backside off shuffle up. MainMenu

  18. 1 Instructional 91-191 Instructional 4 Instructional M TRUST TEMPO DISCIPLINE PREPARATION SHARED RESPONSIBILITY 81-91:“SPACING” Speed break to 7: Get inside flat defender 7 C 6 SPRINT to 4-5! V V 1 step, get FAST width, take flat defender OUT! O I I O • 3-step drop, read shoulders of flat defender “81” Shown OT +3 • Spacing Sit is your eye contact outlet BS OUTS:INDIVIDUAL. Normal 80-90 rules…Quick Out with the option to ask for something different based on CB BS INS:Inside Fade “Fire”. Normal 80-90 BS rules. FS/OUTS INS:ARROW. Split OT +3. Goal is to attract flat defender’s attention and get him to run with you; technique is a bit different than basic Curl in that you are emphasizing WIDTH more than DEPTH. Take one 45º step, then accelerate almost flat to the sideline, snapping your head around on your 3rd step out of the break without slowing down. Can turn up once 5 yds from the sidelines. FS MID:SPACING SIT. Goal is to hold 2nd short defender and stay open if he flies past you. Take a preferred inside release, aim for a spot 6-7 yards deep 2 yards beyond his far shoulder to help create ‘spacing.’ Sit & face QB. If you feel the defender leave, you can slide as far inside as the next LB inside allows or just SLIGHTLY outside if you feel inside-out pressure. FS OUTS:QUICK CURL. Align 2 yards outside M, run Mini-Curl with a slightly widened stem to create ‘spacing.’ You want to burst beyond the flat defender as fast as you can to get out of his sight line, then run the top of your curl in such a way that you feel yourself ‘running around’ him. Speed break at 4-5 yards to a thin Slant angle, drop hips & accelerate back through the hole at 7, present your numbers to QB. Any sliding must be done after numbers are presented and OUTSIDE, not inside! QB:PSL for a clean ‘Individual’ if you have a BS single. 3-step drop, FS is a true ‘key defender’ read off OLB. If he backs up, anchor step to Arrow route; if he opens his shoulders at all and/or overflanks pre-snap, hit the Mini-Curl off a pop-up step. Sit route is Outlet, can also be ‘Q’ in Hot or Warm protection, can be your first look v. an empty LB box. 2nd LB is ‘danger.’ RouteMenu MainMenu

  19. 4 Instructional S ## C M TRUST TEMPO DISCIPLINE PREPARATION SHARED RESPONSIBILITY 2 Route:“SMASH” Note: Inside Rec has the corner “choose,” and the Middle Rec has the Seam/Thin. 2 Instructional 12 yd NOD orMISDIRECTIONBreak! S Break “THIN” across safety’s face if he crosses yours HOOK UPIf C is as deep or deeper than you at the break point. 7 yd C C O O I • Smash on 3d step unless CB really jumps it! I • If you feel C sit on Smash, “Eye him down”, Kick back… …and throw the Corner “62” Shown • Seam/Thin should be available if Saf overrotates to harass the Corner. See in FRONT of it before you throw! • “Flatten” him w/ throw to most open area BS OUTS:GO READ. Normal even-numbered backside rules. Be decisive, NEVER come inside the hash! BS INS:SEAM READ. Normal even numbered backside rules. Pre-read safety, attack and be decisive! FS INS:SEAM/THIN. Push vertically straight up the field, avoiding underneath coverage. Stay on the Seam to hold the safety as long as he’s over top of or inside you. If he opens and crosses your face, break the Thin Post off inside him. FS MID:CORNER “CHOOSE”. Outside release, push to 12, engaging the safety with eye contact. Break to the Corner: Use a ‘Nod’ break if a safety is over you but you’re not being chased; use a 3-step ‘misdirection’ break if a man is running with you. Be prepared for the QB to “flatten” you with the ball depending on where the hole is. As you approach your break point, SEE the CB; if he’s as deep or deeper, don’t waste your route…CHOOSE to hook up and find an open lane in your sandbox, show numbers and make eye contact with QB. Pre-snap read CB as well to alert yourself to this possibility! FS OUTS:SMASH SPIN. Split Mid #s. Push to 7 yds, stare down CB, plant outside foot & snap inside (Snap redirect)…if ball is not on its way as you turn, continue the “Spin” and slide laterally toward the sidelines. Catch/Tuck/Turn get the sideline! QB:Tight U/Kickback.Pre-read CB depth & OLB width. Object receiver read off Smash; hit him on 3d step on outside shoulder pad if no one invades. If invaded from inside, think Corner “Choose” to BS; if invaded from top, kick back 2-ball the Corner to a hole 1/2way between saf & CB, flatten if need be. On 3rd & L, can try to “eye down” CB to open up Corner. RouteMenu MainMenu

  20. ‘FLOOD’ 63-73 163-173 226-227 E-W A three-level route that overloads zones, puts particular stress on alley defenders, and gives a slot receiver freedom to get open in whatever dead spot is presented at a depth of 10 to 12 yards. Normal even-numbered backside rules. Be decisive, NEVER come inside the hash! BS INS:SEAM READ. Normal even numbered backside rules. Pre-read safety, attack and be decisive! FS INS:FLAT. Cut split to 3 yds. You MUST capture the outside shoulder of the widest LB/SS & break flat at 4-6 yards, or whenever you get the leverage you want. Snap flat out of your break, expect ball early. Know what kind of defender you have; if he’s hip to hip, get vertical for 2 steps & drumroll your feet before breaking; if he’s off, speed break off your inside foot to keep your separation. If you have a “Rub Man” outside you, release at a 45º to give the defender no lane to run through. FS MID:RUB to SEAM to THIN. Gauge split by defense; 2-3 yds outside inside rec. v. man; 5-7 yds v. zone. #1 job is to pin/rub off the short defender over you…attack outside his outside hip, don’t be in a hurry to clear him. Once past, accelerate up the Seam, bending to a “THIN” Post if the near safety crosses your face. FS OUTS:GO ‘POCKET’. Split top of #s or Hash. Outside release C and run him off. If he’s squat & you feel him leave, settle in the “Pocket’ behind, widening and cutting the throttle in the area 16-20 yards away from the safety’s rotation. QB:Pre-snap alert for a rolled CB. Tight U drop, hit Flat on 3d step, eyeing CB for POCKET if he’s rolled or v. 2 safeties. Can 2-ball FS Seam in trips if wrong color is outside Flat; if nothing FS, kick back to Seam Read & Go Read. 25. 86-96 “BOX” SCENARIO #1: Regular Box v. 1 safety 1. Pre-snap: Pick the Seam to work based on which is furthest from Jack 2. Stare J onto the Seam opposite the one you chose, hit your chosen Seam on rhythm if he stays 3. If J doesn’t do what you want, hit the Seam away from his movement on the same rhythm 4. If the Seam is zoned off or CB collapses hard on top of route, reset your feet to the shortest Comeback. Do NOT try to work back to the other Seam…he’s DEAD to you.
