  11. Power & Authority in the Industry • The control of Popular Culture has been a constant struggle between Artists, Consumers and Corporate CEOs….. • Elvis had Colonel Parker.. • The Beatles had Brian Epstein • But Sony BMG ended up with the most…

  12. MYTHOLOGY • We all know that The King is not gone. The Elvis Sighting Bulletin Board is offered as a public service so that the public will not be alarmed when seeing The King at their local supermarket or skinny dipping in the neighbour's pool. Imagine it, you go to the supermarket in curlers and there, next to you in line, is The King!

  13. More Myths…….. • Since Robert Johnson met the Devil at the Crossroads in 1936 and got the gift of the Guitar, Myths have developed around the music…some thought that Clapton was ..but of course there was only ever one KING • And one Lizard King

  14. Corporations Rule..? • In the constant struggle between artists, managers and corporations – the corporation usually had the final say. • Some artists who made huge amounts of money have tried to maintain control of their work over their corporate bosses – The Beatles and Michael Jackson for example ! • In the early days there were lots of recording companies • There was room for new artists , managers and ideas. • When the Big 5 decided to abandon the “Black” market in the 40’s…. • A window of opportunity opened up for small independent companies

  15. A Window of Opportunity • The decision of the major companies to drop the “Black” market ( in the 1940s) • Because they believed that black Americans lacked the income to buy records • And white Americans would not buy black music • Opened up the market for independent recording companies • Sun Records in Memphis run by Sam Phillips was one of these tiny outfits • This gave outsiders a chance to enter the market • Enter Elvis Presley…

  16. FIFTY YEARS LATER • In 2006 the big 6 have cornered the market in Music. • The days of individuals making records and becoming major players in Popular Culture are probably gone….. but
