  1. Mapping Out A Solutionfrom GIS to policy change on alcohol Making the Connections & Taking it to the Next Level National EUDL Leadership Conference Anaheim, California August 19, 2010

  2. The Challenge • Technical side • Technology can be intimidating & time-consuming • “I could never do something like that!” • Policy side • Policy change can be intimidating in its own way • Much easier to be non-confrontational • “I could never do something like that!”

  3. A modest Proposal A website dedicated to alcohol-related GIS maps. Modeled after the CDC Chronic Disease GIS Exchange • CDC Division of Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) • Technical development – Children’s Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI) at Duke University • GIS Analyst: Joshua Tootoo

  4. A modest Proposal - Focus on sustaining non-traditional GIS users through creation of a web-based community • Gallery of user-generated maps • Users able to submit feedback (moderated) • Site would also have a bevy of GIS resources AND links to alcohol policy resources • Tips and links related to data • Success stories (similar to CAMY site)

  5. Questions for Discussion
