Do Now: Answer the following on looseleaf from your Class Work Section For each number, just write “yes” or “no” on your paper. Does your mystery book have 3 different settings which create a mood of mystery? Does your book have one setting that creates a mood of mystery in 3 ways? Describe the setting of this book in detail: paint a picture with words. How did the setting contribute to the mysterious atmosphere in the book? • Option 2: Characters– Describe the main character and explain his/her importance to the story’s mystery. What part did he/she play in solving the mystery? What are the traits of this character which enabled the solving of the mystery? • Option 3: Clues– Write a summary of the story, focusing on how the clues to solving the mystery are a significant part of the conflict, suspense and resolution.

There are three main settings that create the mood of this mystery book. The main character’s vacation home holds untold secrets of the past. The filthy cabin belonging to the odd Fake Man, conceals the frightening truth. The suspenseful ferry boat ride steers the main character Walter through a dangerous chase to unlock the truth and uncover all secrets. Each of the settings are thrill-enhancing, and they truly create the mysterious atmosphere of this book.

  17. 1 For my mystery book report, I read Following Fake Man by Barbara Ware Holmes. The book is about Walter who is faced with the mystery of his father’s death and the mystery of who Fake Man is. Walter’s Father’s death is a mystery because no one ever told him how he died. Fake man is a guy dressed up with a mask, and no one knows who he is. These are to big parts of the mystery in addition to the setting.

  18. 2 I chose to read Following Fake Man by Barbara Ware Holmes. While I didn’t think the book was really like a thriller, it did have some creepy moments. These scary parts were from the setting of the book. I thought that the setting really made this book a mystery.

  19. 3 The book was about a mystery. The mysterious parts were in the setting mostly. It happened in Maine in a small town. Some parts happened on a ferry boat. And some parts happened in a creepy cabin. The setting was pretty mysterious.

  20. 4 Sounds, images, characters, clues and settings all contribute to the mystifying and suspenseful qualities of a good mystery novel. As a reader, you may find that clues create the most suspense, but really it is the setting. The suspicions and curiosities that settings evoke are the best part of any mystery. In Following Fake Man, Barbara Ware Holmes expertly creates a mysterious atmosphere through the various settings in the plot-line.

  21. 5 Barabra Ware Holmes entangles mystery, suspense, curiosity and mystification all in one novel. Following Fake Man is a well-written book which any avid mystery reader would enjoy. The greatest cause of such a perfectly portrayed atmosphere of mystery is in the curious settings which Holmes defines. The vacation home which holds untold secrets of the past, the filthy cabin which conceals the frightening truth, and the ferry boat ride which steers Walter through a dangerous chase are all suspense-enhancing settings which truly create the mysterious atmosphere of this book.

  22. 6 Some readers love a good mystery, and some prefer the quiet calm of a simple love story. Whatever your taste, you will love Following Fake Man by Barbara Ware Holmes probably as much as I did. Why? Because the settings in this book really make this book a really good mystery. So, sit back and enjoy my essay.

There are three main settings that create the mood of this mystery book. Walter’s vacation home holds untold secrets of the past. The filthy cabin belonging to Fake Man conceals the frightening truth. And the suspenseful ferry boat ride steers Walter through a dangerous chase to unlock the truth and reveal all secrets. All three of these settings are suspense-enhancing settings which truly create the mysterious atmosphere of this book.
