    1. Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) The Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) provides a structure for students to perform on challenging projects. Projects in fourth grade are somewhat structured, and students complete a series of activities to arrive at a final product.

    2. Quality of Work All projects should reflect quality work by gifted students in the Texas K-12 public school system as defined by the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students.

    3. Purpose The content standards for the projects are the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for English language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. Students who successfully complete a project will demonstrate a deep understanding of at least one area of study in one of these disciplines.

    4. The Project The TPSP consists of research-based standards and an accompanying assessment system that captures the high levels of achievement that gifted/talented students are able to exhibit.

    5. The Project The fourth grade project has two components: Phase I, Learning Experiences, completed in class and Phase II, Independent Research, completed at home

    6. The Project Math Around Town is a mathematics unit that allows students to discover the uses of math in the real world, using interviews with professionals who need math skills for their jobs. Though a mathematics unit, Math Around Town also leads students to practice skills in the other subject areas of English language arts, science, and social studies.

    7. Description of Unit Students will learn about real-life mathematics applications in the world around them.

    8. Goals Students will meet these goals in their explorations: Discover ways in which students use mathematics in and out of school Investigate ways in which professionals use mathematics in their work Create problems and solutions that illustrate how professionals use mathematics concepts in real-world problem situations

    9. Phase I. Learning Experiences Utilizing a variety of strategies in whole group and small instruction, students will utilize higher order thinking skills to understand a variety of ways to solve everyday problems using mathematical applications.

    10. Phase II. Independent Research Research process each student will select a career to study primary focus is to find out how mathematics is used in that career each student will choose a career in which professionals rely heavily upon mathematics skills

    11. Phase II. Independent Research Research process prepare a set of interview questions - conduct an interview with a person in the field of work identified for study. He/she should try to discover all of the mathematical applications used in that person's job.

    12. The product Each student will develop a board game about how math is used in the career studied. The game should include fair rules and nine mathematics concepts found in the fourth grade TEKS.

    13. Communication Communication Communication Each student will participate in a “job interview” in which he/she demonstrates knowledge of the role of mathematics in the career of study. The student may want to dress as a person in that career and discuss the different ways in which math is important to the jobs they studied. The interview should be audiotaped or videotaped.

    14. Communication The student should write questions for the interviewer. Some questions the interviewer may ask include the following: How has the way the people in that job use math changed over time? What math tools did they use in the past that they do not use now? What math tools do they use now that they did not use in the past?

    15. In a Nutshell Research process Each student will select a career to study. A primary focus is to find out how mathematics is used in that career, though the student may want to learn about other aspects of that career as well. Each student will prepare a set of interview questions and conduct and interview with a person in the field of work identified for study. The student will try to discover all the math concepts used in that person’s job.

    16. In a Nutshell Product Each student will develop a board game based on how much math is used in the career studied. The game should include fair rules and nine math concepts from the fourth grade TEKS.

    34. Materials Students will need: Phase I ˝” or 1” binder for project handouts 6 tabbed dividers Phase II any materials necessary for board game audiotape or videotape

    35. Deadlines I will provide a pacing calendar to help keep students on track with their projects. All projects will be due May 7th – 11th. I will meet with students periodically in class to monitor progress and answer any questions they have. I am here to help guide students through this process.

    36. GT Fair Students are expected to display their projects at Kohlberg’s annual GT fair scheduled on Tuesday, May 22nd In the school cafeteria

    37. Final Thoughts I know this is a big project, but your children are up for the challenge. Year after year, I have seen students blossom while undergoing this process. You will be amazed by the knowledge your child develops while exploring the wonderful world in which we live.

    38. Final Thoughts Please remember that while the children need adult assistance for staying on task, they are fully capable of doing the work which is expected of them.
