  1. AnaSonde Assembly

  2. What is the AnaSonde? *Reads temperature, pressure, and humidity data from the atmosphere *After it is sent into the atmosphere, it radios the data back down to a computer on earth *This data can be plotted and used to determine the weather in the upper atmosphere, what type of pressure system is located above the launch location, etc.

  3. What Equipment Do I Need to Operate an AnaSonde? • AnaSonde Kit • Circuit Board • Components • Parachute • Sun Shield • Hardware • Antenna • Hand-held radio, cable • Computer • AnaSonde software (free!)‏

  4. Necessary Tools for Assembly Parts list and instructions Solder Soldering Iron Wire Cutters Tip Cleaner/Wet Sponge Safety GOGGLES! 2 1 5 3 4 6

  5. AnaSonde Kit Breakdown Circuit Board U1: 78L05 voltage regulator U2: PIC12F675 microcontroller U3: 433.92 MHz transmitter X1: 4 MHz resonator D1: LED R1: 620 ohm resistor C1, C2: 0.1 µF capacitor S1: Switch 9-volt battery snap 8 pin socket for U2 Antenna wire LM19 temperature sensor 9 volt snap Antenna R1 X1 S1 C1 U1 D1 U3 C2 LM19 Socket U2

  6. A Quick Lesson on “How to Solder” Soldering is the joining of metals by a fusion of alloys which have relatively low melting points Be VERY careful! Soldering iron is HOT! Tie up your hair! You do not want it hanging in the way of the hot iron! Wear Safety Goggles at ALL times! Eye protection is VERY important!

  7. 1. Apply a very small amount of solder to the soldering iron's tip. This is called tinning. It makes it easier to solder. (Note: This is NOT the solder that will make the connection)‏. 2. Place the part on its correct spot on the board. Bend the leads to hold it in place. Once the component is secured to the board, heat up the component lead and the board.

  8. 3. Once heated, touch the solder to the lead and board, NOT to the iron tip. 4. Once solder is applied, stop applying solder and then remove tip. Allow to cool. Once the part has cooled, clip the ends of the part so they don’t stick out far.

  9. Soldering Tips • Keep your iron on the holder when not using. It WILL burn something if placed somewhere else. • If you create a solder bridge by accident, you can use copper braid to pull out some of the solder by placing it over the bridge and holding the soldering iron to it for around 10-20 seconds at a time.

  10. Soldering Tips (Continued) • Finally, you do NOT need to push the parts all the way down onto the board. In fact, it is better if parts such as D1, U1, the transmitter, the speaker and the temperature sensor remain above the board a little. (See pictures as you go along.) Things such as U2, C1 & 2, X1, R1, S1 and the battery snap should be placed as close as they can to the board.

  11. Do NOT let solder bridges to occur. Make sure you put on enough solder to make the connection but not so much the circuit is shorted. You especially DON’T want it to look like this!!! Not enough solder Too much solder

  12. You do want to make sure that it looks like the below picture. No gaps between the board and the part, but no bridges either. Perfect amount of solder

  13. Let's Start Assembling Our AnaSonde! • Plug in soldering iron and place on stand • Wet sponge if necessary • Look at circuit board and identify: • Component side (with white labels)‏ • Solder side (no labels)‏ • Throughout assembly process, can bend legs, clip, or tape parts to hold in place

  14. Installing Socket for U2 Notch U2 is direction sensitive! Line up notch on U2 with notch drawn on the circuit board!

  15. Tips for Socket Installation Can clip U2 to board using alligator clip Can see small legs coming through to solder side Solder goes on this side, 8 joints total

  16. Install R1 and D1 Step 1: Bend R1 to hold in place. Solder one leg first. Then, reheat the solder and push all the way through. R1 should be very close to surface of circuit board. Step 2: Solder D1 (the LED) in the same manner used for R1. Your circuit board should now have U2, R1, and D1 components installed. CAUTION! D1 (the LED) is direction sensitive. Be sure to solder the long leg into the positive (+) opening on the circuit board.

  17. After R1 / D1 Installation

  18. Install U1: Be Careful! Caution!!U1, the voltage regulator, looks exactly like the temperature sensor! Look for the label on the flat side:78L05 The U1 regulator is direction sensitive. The flat side of the black end should match up with the flat edge of the white label on the circuit board. U1: Voltage Regulator Do not push in too far, leave some height in the legs

  19. C1 and C2 C1 and C2 are NOT direction sensitive. C1 and C2 go on both sides of U1.

  20. S1: On/Off Switch OFF ON MAKE SURE TO SET SWITCH TO THE OFF POSITION!

  21. X1: 4 MHz Resonator Bend one leg to hold in place. Solder one leg. Reheat solder and push resonator all the way through. Solder remaining two legs.

  22. Installing the Temperature Sensor Ground Flat Side V out The label on the flat side of this one should read: LM19 +

  23. Final Instructions • In the Buzz-E, the speaker must go where the transmitter would (U3), however it will go in the first two consecutive holes, NOT in the first and the last!

  24. Final Instructions (Continued) • The microcontroller has a little dot on one end, this end will be the same direction as the notch in the socket. This must be pushed in all the way. (See picture on following slide.) • Finally, the battery snap must have the red lead going to the positive and the black to the negative. Thread the lead up through the bigger holes on the sides of the + and – and then stick them back down through the + and – holes accordingly. (See picture on next slide).

  25. The Final Components!U3: Transmitter, Antenna Wire, Battery Snap, U2: Microcontroller Antenna Wire U3: Transmitter Speaker Microcontroller Battery Snap

  26. Your AnaSonde is ready to fly! • First, let's connect our 9-volt battery and test our AnaSonde • If it works, it is time to attach the parachute and balloon • Fire up your computer and fly! Anasphere, Inc. 106 Pronghorn Trail Bozeman, MT 59718 (406) 994-9354 http://www.anasphere.com/
