  5. Philippians 1:1–11 (ESV) 1“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” What indications of Paul’s affection for the Philippians do you see? Why does he feel such a strong connection to them? Paul is writing from a prison cell in Rome to a group of people who he really cares about. What experiences or connections do Paul and the Christians at Philippi apparently share?

  8. Luke 17:7–10 (ESV) 7 “Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? 8 Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? 9 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’ ” Philippians 1:1–11 (ESV) 1“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. How can our faithfulness to one another be displayed as we accomplish our shared mission to spread the gospel? How does our shared hope in the return of Jesus change the way that we live as we wait? How can our shared mission to spread the gospel be accomplished daily? If reproach for Jesus is intended to be a “shared gift”, how does it affect the way we relate to persecuted or imprisoned Christians around us? Shared Mission -Spreading the Gospel -Faithfulness to the mission and each other Grant “to do something pleasant or agreeable, to do a favor to, gratify” Shared Hope -Sanctification -Seeing Jesus -Resurrection and Glorification Philippians 1:27–30 “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ… standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents…29For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.” The shared blessing of: -authentic partnership with one another -authentic partnership with Jesus -the honor of being “in the club” -unimaginable reward when we see Jesus face-to-face Shared Gift -Grace, Granted -Reproach for Jesus 1:8-11 Frame work for book? compared to eph 1:16-19 (pray...know...3 things) 8 I pray...that you know... 1)10 approve what is excellent...2)be pure and blameless for the day of Christ...3)11 filled with the fruit of righteousness  ultimate purpose '11 to the glory and praise of God.'

What is the heart of Paul's prayers for the Philippian believers? Growing in: Love Understanding of Truth Application of Truth What is the source of pure thinking? What is the source of pure living? When we walk each day thinking pure, living pure and anticipating the return of Jesus, how does this bring glory to God? Are you ready to see Jesus face to face?
