  1. THE HALAL AND HARAM PRINCIPLE IN ISLAM VS

  2. LEARNING OUTCOME AT THE END OF THE SESSION, LEARNERS WILL BE ABLE TO: • DIFERENTIATE THE DEFINATION OF HALAL AND HARAM • LIST THE 2 PRINCIPLES OF HALAL AND HARAM IN ISLAM

  3. WHAT IS HALAL??? WHAT IS PRINCIPLE??? WHAT IS HARAM??? WHAT IS PRINCIPLE OF HALAL AND HARAM???

  4. PRINCIPLE Law or rule that has to be, or usually is to be followed, or can be desirably followed, or is an inevitable consequence of something, such as the laws of nature or the way that a device is constructed

  5. DEFINITION • HALAL • IS AN ARABIC WORD WHICH MEANS ‘PERMITTED’ OR ‘LAWFUL’ • THINGS OR ACTIONS PERMITTED BY SHARIAH LAW WITHOUT PUNISHMENT IMPOSED ON THE DOER • HARAM • IS AN ARABIC WORD WHICH MEANS ‘PROHIBITED’ OR ‘UNLAWFUL’ .HARAM ACTIVITIES ARE FORBIDDEN TO EVERY MUSLIM. • EXAMPLE: PIG/DOGS, KHMAR, INTOXICANTS, DRUGS, BLOOD ETC.

  6. THE PRINCIPLE OF HALAL & HARAM IN ISLAM • ALL THINGS CREATED BY ALLAH S.W.T ARE HALAL, WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITED. • TO MAKE HALAL OR HARAM IS THE RIGHT OF ALLAH ALONE. • THE BASIC REASON FOR THE PROHIBITION OF THINGS ARE DUE TO IMPURITY AND HARMFULNESS.

  7. THE PRINCIPLE OF HALAL & HARAM IN ISLAM (CONT) • WHAT IS PERMITTED HALAL IS SUFFICIENT AND WHAT IS PROHIBITED HARAM IS THEN SUPERLUOUS. • WHATEVER IS CONDUCIVE TO PROHIBITED HARAM IS IN ITSELF IS PROHIBITED HARAM. • FALSELY REPRESENTING THE UNLAWFUL HARAM AS LAWFUL HALAL IS PROHIBITED. • DOUBTFUL THINGS SHOULD BE PROHIBITED.

  8. PRINCIPLE 1 • ALL THINGS CREATED BY ALLAH S.W.T ARE HALAL, WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITED. PROHIBITED • PORK/DOG AND ITS FAMILY • BLOOD • MEAT OR ANIMAL THAT DIED OF CAUSES OTHER THAN PROPER SLAUGTHERING ACCORDING TO THE SHARIAH COMPLIANCE (CARRION)

  9. PROHIBITED • FOOD THAT HAS BEEN DEDICATED OR IMMOLATED TO SOMEONE OTHER THEN ALLAH S.W.T • KHAMR (WINE) • INTOXICANTS • INAPPROPRIATELY USED DRUGS

  10. Surah Al-Mā'idah (The Table Spread) - سورة المائدة ‘Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience’. (5:3)

Padahariiniorang-orangkafirtelahputusasauntuk (mengalahkan) agamamu, sebabitujanganlahkamutakutkepadamerekadantakutlahkepada-Ku. PadahariinitelahKusempurnakanuntukkamuagamamu, dantelah Ku-cukupkankepadamunikmat-Ku, dantelah Ku-ridhai Islam itujadi agama bagimu. Makabarangsiapaterpaksakarenakelaparantanpasengajaberbuatdosa, sesungguhnya Allah MahaPengampunlagiMahaPenyayang.’ (QS 5:3)

  12. PRINCIPLE 2 HALAL OR HARAM IS BASED ON THE INJUCTIONS ARE STATED IN AL-QURAN AND SUNNAH NO HUMAN BEING, NO MATTER HOW PIOUS OR POWERFUL, MAY TAKE IT INTO HIS HANDS TO CHANGE IT EXAMPLE: IN THE MENU, HOTELS/RESTAURANTS ARE FORBIDDEN TO MIX THE WINE WITH THE STEAK THEY PREPARE

  13. AL NAHL(THE BEE) 114-115 Therefore, you shall eat from GOD's provisions everything that is lawful and good, and be appreciative of GOD's blessings, if you do worship Him alone. Only Four Foods Prohibited He only prohibits for you dead animals, blood, the meat of pigs*, and food which is dedicated to other than GOD. If one is forced (to eat these), without being deliberate or malicious, then GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful. *The most devastating trichinosis parasite, Trichinellaspiralis, (also the pork tapeworm Taeniasolium) survives in the meat of pigs, not the fat. More than 150,000 people are infected annually in the United States

  14. AL NAHL(lebah) -115 ‘Sesungguhnya Allah hanyamengharamkanatasmu (memakan) bangkai, darah, dagingbabidanapa yang disembelihdenganmenyebutnamaselain Allah; tetapibarangsiapa yang terpaksamemakannyadengantidakmenganiayadantidak pula melampauibatas, makasesungguhnya Allah MahaPengampunlagiMahaPenyayang’.

  15. Principle 3 • Why prohibited? • Due to the impurity and harmfulness • A muslim is not supposed to question exactly why or how something is unclean or harmful in what Allah has prohibited. • There might be obvious reasons and there might be obscure reasons.

  16. “ But say not – for any false thing that your tongues may put forth ,- ‘this is lawful, and this is forbidden,’ so as to ascribe false things to Allah. For those who ascribe false things to Allah, will never prosper.” (al-nahl : 116)

  17. Rationale Of Prohibited • Carrion and death animals are unfit for human consumption because the decaying process leads to the formation of chemicals that are harmful to humans. • Blood that is drained from an animal contains harmful bacteria, products of metabolism, and toxins. • Intoxicants are considered harmful for the nervous system, affecting the senses and human judgments, leading to social and family problems and in some cases even death.

  18. Swine serves as a vector for pathogenic worms to enter the human body. Infections by TrichinellaSpiralisand TaeniaSoliumare common.

  19. What permitted halal is sufficient & what prohibited haram is superfluous Principle 4

  20. Al Quran - Al-Nahl 114-115 • So eat of the sustenance which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good; and be grateful for the favours of Allah, if it is He Whom ye serve. He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

  21. HEALHTY LIFE STYLE What is permitted (HALAL) is SUFFICIENT MANY OF HALAL LITTLE BIT OF HARAM

  22. Faith Health Body Mental Life Property Family Progeny Society What is prohibited (HARAM) is the SUPERFLUOUS NEGATIVE EFFECTS Prohibited only thing that are unnecessary or dispensable UNLAWFUL

  23. Haram/ Unlawful ALCOHOL • Poisonous • Intoxicants • Harmfulness • Hazardous • Najs PIG AND ITS DERIVATES PROHIBITED CARRION BLOOD DERIVATES

  24. Principle 5 • Whatever is conducive to the prohibited (haram) is in itself is prohibited (haram). • If something is prohibited, anything leading to it is also prohibited. • Eg… the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w cursed not only the one who drinks intoxicating drinks but also the one who produces them, the one who serves them, the one to whom they are served and also the one to whom the price of them is paid.

  25. Principle 6 • Falsely representing unlawful (haram) as lawful (halal) is prohibited. • It is unlawful to make flimsy excuses or to consume something that is prohibited, such as drinking khamr for supposedly medical reasons. • Calling a haram things by name other than its own or changing its form while retaining its essence is a devious tactic. It remains sinful. • Haram still haram

  26. Doubtful things should be avoided Principle 7

  27. HadithRasulullah • "Halal is clear and Haram is clear; in between these two are certain things that are suspected. Many people may not know whether those items are Halal or Haram. Whosoever leaves them, he is innocent towards his religion and his conscience… " (SahihBukhari & Sahih Muslim)

  28. Principle 7 HALAL/ LAWFUL NO HALAL LOGO DIRTY ENVIROMENT NO HALAL CERTIFICATION CROSS CONTAMINATION WITH NAJS DERIVED FROM ANIMAL/ BONED UNPROPER HANDLING IMPURITY AVOID HARAM/ UNLAWFUL SYUBHAH/DOUBTFUL
