  1. 4 Things to Know About Your Floor Finishing Project

  2. Floor Finishing New Home • Whether in the construction of a new home or as part of renovations, the question of the choice of flooring is often food for thought, sometimes even a source of hesitation.  • This is even more the case when it is a parquet floor. • It must be understood that when a hardwood floor is laid or restored (sanding, varnishing, oiling), this has certain consequences.  • However, it is a sustainable choice, a real investment. • That's why it's important to get information before making a decision. • I have gathered for you my best advice regarding the choice of flooring to help you in your approach. Good reading!

  3. 1- A Factory Varnished Wood Is Not Harder • Wood suppliers and flooring manufacturers now offer high quality products. • Their processes make it possible to plane, sand and vitrify the planks optimally.  • This gives so-called "prefinished" floors, solid wood and in different species such as maple, birch and ash. • As the finish is cooked in the factory, the uniformity of it is perfect.  • That said, they are not more resilient than old hardwood floors refurbished with quality products.

  4. 2- Old and New Floors: The Same? • To this common question, I would answer: yes and no.  • Let me explain.  • The visible surface of prefinished or engineered floors is made of "real" hardwood, like that of old floors that were varnished once installed and were still solid wood. • Engineered wood floors contain only hardwood veneer and are less "alive" (heat, moisture). • Once on the ground, we recognize the floors prefinished by the angled grooves that are present between each of the boards.

  5. 3- Sandblasting Does Not Correct Everything • I usually tell my clients that sanding does not change the nature of a floor.  • By sanding it, we just expose it more and show it as it really is. • Sandblasting has the effect of highlighting the grain of the wood, but also its imperfections that may be natural or not. • I remember the case of a rustic maple wood floor that had been dyed white; the client wanted to change his appearance and leave it, this time, natural. • From the beginning of sanding, all the blackish spots naturally present in this wood species appeared.  • It was therefore necessary to dye the wood to restore a more uniform appearance.

  6. 4- The Finishing Of a Floor Takes Time • At Selection Buff and Coat, we are real perfectionists.  • We use proven techniques, we use the best equipment Bona and we apply high quality products in each of our projects. • The whole philosophy of the company, based on passion, patience, meticulousness and method, is in harmony with the first requirement of our work: to perfectly restore a floor or a hardwood staircase requires time. • Some people will say, "I understand your philosophy, but I only want to get an acceptable result, without having to invest too much time." • To this assertion, I will answer that sanding, dyeing or varnishing a parquet must always respect rules, established techniques, otherwise the final result will always be disappointing.
