  3. Language is always changing! • In the United States we do not have an official language. English is just spoken by the majority. • Language is always changing. The language we speak now will probably be very different in the future.

  5. Listen to the following song. • Kenny Allen is an English speaking American living in Ethiopia. He speaks both English and Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia. He blends both languages in his music. • Since he uses English and Amharic does that mean he is speaking incorrectly? Can you still understand what the phrase “anchi konjo” means as he switches between the languages?

Notes • Remember, one form of English is NOT better than the another form. • However, Standard English is a form of English that is currently expected by most businesses, schools, and tests such as the PSSA. • Ideally, we need to all learn how to code-switch, so we can succeed in all situations.
