What was the underground resistance movement? • The Underground Resistance Movement were groups during World War II dedicated to fighting Germany who was invading their country. • It is an organized effort of supporters of a common goal against authority. • There were even anti-Nazi resistance movements within Germany itself.

  3. What was the purpose of the movement? • The purpose of the movement was to defeat the Nazi dictatorship. • Some goals were to kill Hitler and cleanse Germany of Nazism. • Many Jews came together to fight against the Nazi’s in the concentration camps. • On October 7, 1944 on of the crematoriums in the Auschwitz II camp was blown up into flames.

  4. What kind of resistance movements were there? • There was a French Resistance Movement, which fought the Nazi’s who invaded Germany. Eventually in 1940, France surrendered which resulted in the Vichy France, which was the new state under Germany. On June 6,1944 the Battle of Normandy took place. This was where the movement won back France. • There were also Belgian, Polish, and Dutch resistance networks. They also contributed in the defeat against the Germans.

  5. Who Participated in the movement? • The Jewish population mostly ran the movement against the Germans. • In 1936, Dr. Karl Goerdeler was the mayor of Leipzig, Germany. He originally supported Hitler, but when the oppression of the churches and Jews came he then dedicated all of his power to the removal of the Nazi dictatorship.

  6. Resistance in the Military • The military tried to help the Jews escape from Germany. • One military leader in the movement was Colonel Hans Oster, he was an officer in Abwer( German Intelligence Agency). • Once the officers discovered Hitler’s war intentions they began to fight.

  7. Where did the movement Take place? The movement took place All over Europe, such as France, Germany, Slovakia, Britain, Belgium, Poland, and the Netherlands

  8. Who actually experienced This? David Szmulewski, a member of the Movement, was assigned to take pictures Of the activities inside the crematoriums. Jozef Cyrankiewicz assigned him to do so. Cyrankiewicz said the reason for this was “to convince the outside world that what we Said was happening in Auschwitz was Really true”

What were some statistics and Data? • There were at least 8.86 million Jews living in Europe. • At least 10,000 Jews escaped from the Germans under Captain Frank Foley. • France rescued 12,000 Jewish children and found homes for them in Switzerland. • Approximately 6 million Jews were victims of the Nazi genocide.
