  1. Lesson 5.5- Writing Equations in Point-Slope Form, pg. 286 Goals: To write the equation of a line in point-slope form. To write linear equation in different forms.

  2. Point-Slope Form The equation y- y1=m(x–x1) is written in point-slope form, where (x1, y1) is the given point on a nonvertical line and m is the slope of the line. y- y1=m(x–x1) y (x1,y1) x slope Given points

  3. Ex. 1: Write an equation given slope and a point. • Point (-2, 0); m=-3/2 y- y1=m(x–x1)

  4. Point (0, 5); horizontal line y- y1=m(x–x1)

  5. Point (3, 8); m=2 y- y1=m(x–x1)

  6. Now you try….. • Point (8, -3); m=3/4 y- y1=m(x–x1) 5. Point (1, -3); m= -5/8 y- y1=m(x–x1)

  7. Forms of Linear Equations

  8. Ex. 2: Write an equation in standard form. 1. y = 3/4x – 5 Ax + By = C

  9. 2. y– 13 = 4(x – 2) Ax + By = C

  10. 3. y – 2 = -2/5(x – 8) Ax + By = C 4. y – 3 = 2.5(x + 1) Ax + By = C

  11. 5. y – 6 = 1.3(x + 7) Ax + By = C 6. y + 7 = ½(x + 2) Ax + By = C Your turn!

  12. y+6 = 2(x -3) y =mx + b y + 3 = 2/3(x – 6) y =mx + b Ex. 3: Write an equation in slope-intercept form.

  13. y-2 = 3(x -1) y =mx + b y+2 = -2(x – 5) y =mx + b

  14. y+3 = -4(x +2) y =mx + b 6. y+ ½ = x - ½ y =mx + b Your turn!

  15. Write the point-slope form, slope-intercept form and standard form of and equation with point (5, -3) with slope of 10.

  16. SUMMARY • Slope-Intercept: y = mx + b • Point-Slope: y- y1=m(x–x1) • Standard: Ax + By = C • NBA #5, pg. 289, problems 16-52 even
