  1. Continuing Professional development of teachers in TURKEY

  2. 700.000 teachers 55.000 schools 19.000.000 students (excluding university students)

  3. Students in universities, (Student Teachers) (usually 4th year) have to attend schools to get the observation and school experience lessons for two terms.

  4. After graduating from the faculties of education, graduates become prospective teachers.

  5. They follow a year essential education under the guidance of a teacher. They prepare a file with lesson plans, educational regulations, rights and responsibilities, ceremonies, pedagogical issues, curriculum and related documents.

  6. At the end of the process the principal and the guidance teacher affirm his performance to be a teacher.

  7. CPD of teachers is run nationwide by the In-Service Training Office within the Ministry of National Education.

  8. There are 7 institutes for in-service courses usually on the coastal areas with accommodation and catering service.

  9. Throughout the year there are programmes, but usually in summer. Courses and seminars are varied according to the need, the changes in the curriculum, the use of lab tools, technological devices, etc. The length of the programmes varies from 1 day to 6 months.

  10. In-service courses are both optional and compulsory: Courses are put on the web-site of the MNE*. Teachers apply for courses they would like to attend. Sometimes teachers are asked to apply to certain ones by the inspectors or masters. If they don’t want to attend, they sent sick-notes to the authorities. Locally, MNE* organises similar courses and seminars, too. The contents of each course are different. For example: A computer based teaching seminar has more different agenda than the one about the office management. * Ministry Of National Education.
