WiFi Implementation UpdateSummary • Work is underway and will be implemented between today and the end of May • WiFi access is to the Internet • WiFi can be used to access ODS, email, and other internet-based applications • 802.1b and 802.1g is supported • Delegates can use laptops or PDAs with WiFi capability

ODS UpdateFree ODS • ODS will be available to general public at no charge • Currently only Member States and UN staff have free access • Equipment is being ordered which will provide a primary and hot backup site for ODS in the NYC data centers which will provide enough capacity to address “Free ODS” • To be completed by the end of 2004. • ODS will be mirrored in the DPKO UNLB data center in Italy to provide load balancing for Europe and Africa as well as a “hot site” in the event the NYC data centers are rendered inoperable. • Work will commence in the latter part of 2004

ODS Update Search Questions • The current search screen was designed with the DHL for Library Standards • Once ODS is “Free” a Google Search Screen will be added to give additional search options as is available in commercial web sites (Take note that Google will not search documents that were scanned from paper) • If you use www.un.org and reference an ODS document it will be retrieved (Internet Browser Cookie Option must be enabled to avoid the ODS logon screen)

Permanent Mission Email SPAM Update • UN implemented (3) anti-SPAM appliances in 2003 which filter 94% of the SPAM (100K emails per day) • Appliances filter UNHQ & Perm Mission email • Some Permanent Missions required access to email using “POP3 Accounts” where Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express is used to access email • Email for those missions not being filtered for SPAM • Test underway this week with the Canadian mission which will enable anti-SPAM filtering for all Permanent Missions regardless of their email desktop software

Permanent Mission Email SPAM & Virus Statistics • On average 90% of the email received is SPAM • On average 50% of email contains a virus or is the result of a virus • ITSD has updated the Anti-Virus Software with 11 updates in the past 16 days • Any email that comes from an unknown sender should be deleted • No attachments should be opened unless the sender is known • ITSD will be scanning each email for SPAM and Virus signatures (Currently only some Missions are being filtered for SPAM; none are being filtered for Viruses)

Delegate PC Equipment UpdatePC Upgrades • All PCs in the Secretariat for delegate’s use have been or will be upgraded to newer models • All connections to the Internet will use the WiFi infrastructure when available (Delegates Lounge has already been implemented); • All PCs in the Conference Room A-C Hallway will be upgraded when WiFi is available

ITSD / Informatics Working GroupCommunications • There a number of ICT related projects on the horizon and a better method of communication has to be established with the Permanent Missions to facilitate planning and implementation • There is no consistent ICT focal point list in every mission • ITSD must call the main number to contact a Permanent Mission, fax a generic number, or email a generic account
